Up in Yorkshire in a couple of weeks (doing a week's driving trip around Harrogate, Masham, Whitby, Leeds and York) and after some decent recommendations of places to eat and drink. Already sorted where to eat in Whitby (probably the Marine hotel as staying there) and Masham (probably the White Bear as staying there).

Happy eating pretty much anything (as long as it's not eggs).

Also any advice on 'accident blackspots' where our friends in the local constabulary may hang out with a camera van is very welcomed!

If you search back a month or two there was a thread on this very subject.

If you're in Ilkley I can recommend The Wheatley in Ben Rhydding

Blacksmiths arms at Biggin. The Star at Sancton. Both great food.

The Ellerby Hotel in Ellerby is well worth the trip, its about 8 miles north of Whitby.

In York, some of the best pubs are in the City Centre, The White Sawn, The Old White Swan, The Lamb and Lion and so on.

I've seen the Scamera Vans out on the A64 mostly, normally trying to trap commuters on their way to Leeds in the Morning, and then coming back the other way on an evening. With Leeds Festival on this weekend, I suspect they'll be on the A64 Malton bypass and the Pickering-Whitby road mainly.

The crown inn at great ouseburn (between harrogate and york) is well worth a trip. Fantastic for sunday lunch also.

Kendills (french restaurant) in Leeds City centre is worthy of a visit if youre likely to be in town.

The Durham ox at Crayke use to be good and is on the way from York to Whitby. Some pretty good roads around there too!

York has some great pub but sadly terrible food.

There are a few good spots but if I'm honest, travel out of the centre for a decent meal at a reasonable price.

Are you after anything specific? Pubs/clubs lager/ale fast food/fine dining?

Thanks for the comments so far.

Probably no clubs (getting on a little at 28 going on 58!).

More ale pubs than lager ones. Decent continental beer bars are welcomed though. Just no crap chain places.

Restaurant wise - literally anything that's good. That could be from a (gastro)pub to a fine dining place.

Victoria at Cattal (01423 330249) off the Knaresborough/York road is excellent for ale and food , but I would advise booking as its popular.

Punch Bowl at Marton cum Grafton, nice pub grub.
The Malt Shovel at Brearton, or Bleinkers as I think it is also called?

Just add the warnings about the camera vans.. They're absolutely everywhere at the minute now they've bought new ones, even on very very quiet back roads where you'd never expect them to be.

Worst bit on the B1217 between Towton and Garforth! The road carries literally no traffic and there's a nice well sighted straight.. right at the end.

It's literally not worth speeding anywhere any more imo. Depressing.

If you're in the area the Ryther Arms in Ryther is a fantastic steak house.

The Angel at Hetton is well worth a diversion to the north of Harrogate but be sure to get there early to get served! For my money, I'd take that over The Star at Harome.

In York itself, there are plenty of good pubs - but not many good ones that do fantastic food as well.
If you don't mind the burger end of pub grub, then the Waggon and Horses on Lawrence Street was last years' CAMRA pub of the year and their burgers are properly good.
The Spread Eagle on Walmgate does good Jamaican street food on a Friday and Saturday night, but I'm not sure about the beer quality.
Thomas's on Museum Street does pretty good beer and food, I was more impressed than I thought I was going to be at any rate.

Cheers,
Tom

Trenchers for Fish & Chips without queuing in Whitby, also White Horse & Griffen or Greens for a wider choice.

Cote in York for French food, Akbaars for Curry, Piccolinos do reasonable Italian stuff.

Pivo for beer in York, or House of Trembling Madness and Evil Eye for cocktails/Thai/ pure quirky ness.

Le Langhe for brilliant Italiian Food and drink, with associated Italian service levels inYork.

Yorke Arms out near patley bridge, super road to get there and the food is out of this world. One of the top 3 female chefs in the UK. Staff can sometimes be a bit up themselves though.

Black Swan. Oldstead. Awesome, simpley awesome.

Star Inn, Thirsk. Lost its michellin star recently but its still super though the service is can be a bit iffy.

The Ox at Calke. Good food and great beer and reasonably priced. Best gravy I have ever tasted.

Crab and lobster, up their own arses and trading off what was once a good reputation. DO NOT take a table in the bar as it will only add to the misery.

Suspect you mean the Star at Harome, not Thirsk.

It lost its star in 2011.

The Blue Bicycle in York is an interesting restaurant and nice. An old brothel!
