That's Automobile Association, not Alcoholics Anonymous by the way.

I hit a fox on the way to the airport on Boxing Day Morning at 4:30am.

No bother, I'm in the AA.

They refused to recover me because I'd been involved in an accident and not suffered a mechanical breakdown. I've gone into this a bit further and there are loads of things they class as being an accident such as stones through radiators, buckled wheels / suspension through kerbing etc. Even cambelt off due to stone flying up would be an accident so you're not covered.

Please copy and paste to anyone who thinks they have cover. You haven't!

I'm with the AA and they queried me when I asked for accident recovery as well. I suppose I never thought about it being a limitation.

Different levels of cover. I have been happy as an AA member for 21 years now & they are very good.

Perhaps you get what you pay for?

when I had a crash, I had to pay them £100, then claim it back off my insurance company, who then claimed it off the 3rd party that hit me.

If you have mechanical breakdown cover, it covers you for repairing or recovering your vehicle following a mechanical breakdown, collisions are for the insurance company to sort, or you if you don't want to claim.

Did hitting a fox actually disable your vehicle???

Hi Rich,

It gradually came to a halt with three broken radiators. (cooling, air con and intercooler; it was the cooling one that stopped it)

I have full comprehensive top of the range cover for any driver of any of my cars plus me and the girlfriend to drive or be a passenger in any car. I just don't have homestart.

I've questioned them with regard to what is and what is not classed as an accident and the person on the phone said they were not at liberty to disclose that. I said what about if I drove through a deep puddle and flooded the engine with water; and that would be an accident. Also if a stone flew up and smashed a window, holed radiator or unshipped the cam belt, then once again you're on your own. A friend's wife reversed into a kerb and broke a rear suspension member and they refused to recover her.

When I joined the AA about 4 years ago, I specifically remember asking whether I was covered for every eventuality such as accidents, the girlfriend putting diesel in her petrol car etc and I was told ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING was covered.

What they have said is that, if they are not busy, they will recover you but you need to pay them up front before they come out and you can then claim it back off your insurance. But if they're busy (mine was 4am Boxing day morning and in the 90 minutes to Peterborough I had counted 1 car and 5 lorries and they claimed to be really busy so couldn't send anyone) you are on your own.

I just feel like I've been stitched up here; and I'm not the first.

I guess being very vague on the phone helps? "Hi, I've broken down, err, I don't know whats up with it, it's just stopped", then discuss with the mechanic who are (or in my experience have always been) bloody fantastic & will probably just recover or temp repair and simply put "split radiator" on the jobsheet?!

It does suck, and when you're stuck at the side of the road you are forced into a corner somewhat! frown

Failing that, as above, call your insurance co and say you have hit a fox and your car needs recovering, but it would probably be cheaper just to pay the AA!??

You missed the bit about boxing day morning at 4am. Nobody on any phones at any insurance company.

In hindsight, I could have bullstted my way round it but, as I am supposedly covered for every eventuality there was no need.

Also, the AA send someone out on a motorbike or small van to assess the problem first (to get their response time down to 40 minutes) and then send the recovery truck or whatever is required some time later. I suppose if he was a "very nice man" he would have sorted it for me.

Also, had the girlfriend in with me. Allegedly they don't refuse women if they are on their own so again in hindsight, I could have got her to ring and pretend I wasn't there.

Ah, does sound pretty bad with more detail.

Try going up the food chain by making a formal complaint and ask to speak to/complain to management. Sounds like you have just reason to try and nothing to lose.

'Accidents' are usually insurance claim territory though.

Good luck & keep us posted Dave.
