So we currently live in a nice area in south manchester though we're ready for a change, the weather has worn us down after several years. We're from South Yorkshire/North East originally so we're considering a move back over that side of the country to North Yorkshire, in-between both our parents. We're considering York, Harrogate as starting points but I wonder if any of you can comment on the nicer areas in North Yorkshire that you'd consider living (or do). We want to be in a village setting ideally, so either outskirts of somewhere larger or in a town/village, detached 3 bed house with decent garden, walking distance to shops, pubs etc but nothing on the main drag that's too busy nor too isolated. Something with a bit of character, decent weather. We're both in our 40's now so there's no need for nightclubs etc, we're looking for a slightly slower (but not dead) pace of life... tottering down the pub with the dogs type of thing.

Richmond, close to the A66/A1 and quite nice.

Leyburn, quiet, enough shopping shops good pubs.

Helmsley/Pickering or any one of the villages along the A170. The Vale of Pickering has some of the lowest rainfall numbers in the country.

yes

Helmsley or Pickering would be my suggestion, or Kirkbymoorside

Only you know what you want.

Your best bet really is to sell your current house and rent a place that looks like it might be vaguely what you're after. Don't be TOO picky on this bit. Then spend your spare time exploring and house-hunting EVERYWHERE that looks vaguely realistic. RightMove is your friend.

You'll get to know the options like the back of your hand, and you'll refine your requirements immensely.

s'wot we did last winter, when we moved from Hertfordshire to Herefordshire.

Re your comment on the weather:

I'm originally from south Manchester and now live in North Yorkshire (via a lot of other places). We'll be leaving as soon as we can find a suitable gap in childrens schools / economy / etc.

If the weather plays even a scintilla of a whisp of an idea then don't bother. It is monumentally, unbelievably st over here weather wise, WAAAAAAAY worse than south Manchester / Cheshire where I lived once upon a year.

In summary - North Yorkshire sucks badgers asses.

Really? Statistically year for year being the right side of the Pennines gives miles better weather and lower rainfall. That is why the Lake Distict is so full of lakes.

"Decent weather" hehe

You're in Britain, the weather is always going to be changeable. If you want decent, reliable weather you need to move to a large continental landmass or at least away from the Jet Stream.

Another vote for these. Good links to York, Harrogate, Whitby and Scarborough, with Leeds not far away either. Awesome roads for a quick morning blast. Plenty of great foody pubs.

Plus its the best part of Gods own County, what more could you want?

Can't argue with that.

Also handy for Porsche specialists...

If you can afford it, I'd go for one of the villages north of York on the Ouse, Newton-on-Ouse is lovely.

There is a good little independent service garage in Newton, run by a great bloke who drives a Countach LP400.

Also the Dawney Arms is a lovely pub and you can moor your boat there. They do fantastic food too. It's where I've always planned to live if I can ever get out of London

I grew up in a village on the outskirts of Skipton. It is beautiful around there, and the house prices aren't too bad. Close enough to York, Leeds and Bradford.

The weather discussion REALLY depends on where you live and a couple of miles can make a HUGE difference. For example, I was out mountain biking a couple of weeks ago - I started in Helmsley - and the weather was fine. Only two miles north there were three inches of snow on the ground. And the difference between the Scarborough side of the moors and Helmsley side can be several feet of snow. A couple of years ago we had 8ft of snow on the Blakey Road - even the snow ploughs couldn't get through, and yet there was a bout 4 inches in Helmsley.

Another example: I was coming back across the A66 yesterday following snow ploughs and the whole of the Dales was blanketed in lots of snow. There was nothing on the Moors - although we do have some now on higher ground.

The western side of the moors does seem to get the nicer weather IME.

ETA Helmsley fits your bill nicely as does Osmotherley. Kirby, Pickering, and Malton are ok too, but tend to be a bit rougher in the pubs.
