Any recommendations for food etc. for a first date in York? Will be meeting her after 6 on Tuesday evening. TIA

If you're looking to impress then Skosh is superb, right up there among the best in North Yorkshire. For something different Barbakan is Polish and also very good. We've been to them both a few times and they're consistently good.

Couple of great suggestions there, Barbakan is lovely for food not sure how romantic? I would add Ambiente, and Rustique. Happy dating.

Two good additions there too. Ambiente would be more fun and engaging and Rustique good for a more classic meal date.

another vote for Rustique

haven't tried the others but we don't eat anywhere else in York. It is a fixed price menu but the food is brilliant, staff friendly and its upmarket feeling. Both restaurants are small and intimate with a selection of wines, beers and cocktails.

On a first date ? Are you squidding ? She's likely to batter him taking her to such a plaice, she won't think he's much of a catch. On the scales of things, it's a bad idea.

Agree- fins aren't what they used to be there ; getting a good meal would be a fluke.

Sole traders often are, but some are dab hands , even if they flounder sometimes and lose their plaice.

Enough !

What is the name of the Nepalese place in York? Was v impressed by their fish speciality when I went.

There's two now. The one upstairs in what was a Thai place, is the Yak & Yeti.

There's a new one just opened in what was the Goan restaurant, but can't recall the name.

House of trembling madness for informal and different, food is more bar snacks cracking place and loads of interest. Can be quite busy so an opportunity to have to squeeze up....

Probably went to the Wetherby Whaler as recommended. Fish, chips, mushy peas and scraps, plus extra bread to make chip butties. There's no way you can beat that on a 2nd date so its all downhill from there.
