Apparently the BIB are starting operation Helical:

I just hope that they are equally harsh with the numpty brigade that insist in clogging the roads by driving along perfectly decent roads at 30 mph.

So hey, lets be careful out there.

Operation Helical has today been launched by North Yorkshire police.

Intensive police action will target dangerous, careless and irresponsible road users, and officers warn that they will take firm, decisive action against offenders.

These include drivers using a hand-held phone while driving, crossing double white lines, and speeding. Drivers and passengers not wearing seatbelts are also a priority target.

Expert analysis has highlighted 39 stretches of road with poor accident records, but Deputy Chief Constable Adam Briggs warns: “It is not roads that cause accidents – it is drivers and riders. We will be concentrating resources on those 39 identified routes and we will act positively against anyone we see endangering other road users.”

The reality is that the police will employ a zero-tolerance approach and even those travelling just 2 or 3 mph over the limit will be targeted. For the first time in NY, the police will be using:-

· Autovision. This gives irrefutable evidence of speeding individuals and which can be deployed on any road at any time. Autovision records the speed and registration number of passing vehicles – together with a picture of the driver’s face.

· Automatic Number Plate Recognition system to read and check the numbers of passing vehicles. Computers instantly check whether each vehicle is taxed or insured and its owner has a driving licence; the vehicles may be seized.

Not sure how you can nick people for 1 or 2mph over the limit given the inherent inaccuracy of speedos. So what is the speed limit on an open single carriage way road 60mph, or really 55mph just in case your speedo is inaccurate.

Speedos tend to exaggerate a bit so as long as you can glance at it every now and then so see that it's indicating the speed limit you'll probably actually be about 3-5mph under. To be fair to plod I know most of those roads and have seen really nasty accidents on them... usually caused by idiots overtaking lines of traffic... although the lines of traffic are usually caused by idiots doing 30-40 in a 60, so the penalties need to be handed-out to people driving at excessive margins either side of the speed limit, not just those going over. Fortunately my favourite North Yorkshire roads are so twisty it's nigh-on impossible to break the speed limit, so I won't be losing any sleep or having any less fun.

The new North Yorks Chief Constable is the ex South Yorks Deputy Chief Constable. It was only a matter of time before he started beating up on the motorist. If you drive anywhere in South Yorks you'll know what I mean.

I get it, very good

In reality I have no problem nicking those without seat belts, on the phone, driving like idiots, speeding in 40/30/20 limits, over taking on blind bends, crests of hills etc.

I just wish the numpties that insist on driving at 35-40 on decent 60 roads, and then get to the 30 limit, and keep on going at 40/45. Just totally not paying attention to what is going on on the road.

But the odd bit of gentle speed in a car designed for it isn't so bad. But I do take the point about the twistys, in which case BIB is welcome to sit with a camera all day, becuase the fun can be at lower speeds.

The comment about targeting those doing 2 or 3 mph above the limit means they intend to just sit targeting ALL motorists, with no discretion whatsoever. 53mph and you get a ticket. Where's the sanity in that? It's just about revenue and reducing drivers to the lowest possible denominator, with everyone following like sheep. No talking to the real idiots, but Mabel in the Micra coming back from the shops will get a ticket.

And the public lose yet more respect for the poor sods tasked with implementing it...

Im sure as a petrolhead Rich will agree. Sign of the times though unfortunatley, people get away with shit driving standards everywhere yet people like us could loose our licences through totting up without having posed a danger to anyone.

I gather this is why there are grey boxes with 2 runs of "elastic" across the road all over the place.

I suppose we must be one of the last places to have had common sense ruling the roads rather than a lucrative photography group. Well apart from kirkstall road and a road in middleton, those 2 short roads have about 14 cameras between them, probably ran out of funds to put anymore anywhere else.

Unfortunatly there have been alot of changes to road layouts all over the place recently, i have not noticed any of them improve things for anyone, except people who are anti vehicle. Its a shame the people who plan roads and junctions dont realise that on the actual roads a model 1:1 scale to the one they made with matchbox cars earlier doesnt leave much room for the vehicles.

All us car drivers could feel sorry for ourselves but spare a thought for all the lorry drivers who have get through those gaps you could barely get a smart car through.

Once upon a time there was a place in England where motorist were treated like human beings. So unusual was this that motorists called it 'Gods Country'. Now, like the rest of the country it has become a place where law abiding motorists are criminalised while criminals are free to roam in the sure and certain knowledge that policing of real crime has ended.

I bet the vast majority of prosecutions will be of mums out shopping and older drivers.
