Taken from teh York Press today

"LOVE them or loathe them, controversial speed cameras could soon be coming to North Yorkshire - if council bosses get their way, The Press can reveal. The county is one of only two in England that does not currently use speed cameras.

But now, City of York Council is increasing the pressure on the police for the cameras to be installed at accident black spots since there was a change in the new Chief Constable to Grahame Maxwell in May.

Liberal Democratic leader of the council Steve Galloway said: "We would not use cameras as a revenue generating exercise, but would be very selective with our placement of them."

Speed camera action urged

SPEED cameras could soon be brought to North Yorkshire as council bosses up the pressure on the county's police force to install them, it can be revealed.

The county is one of only two in England, along with Durham, that does not use speed cameras currently.

The council is stepping up the pressure on the police for the cameras since Grahame Maxwell became Chief Constable in May.

advertisementIt is understood that the former Chief Constable was not in favour of installing the cameras.

Liberal Democratic leader of the council Steve Galloway said: "Time has now moved on. The former Chief Constable was never an enthusiast of speed cameras and discussions about installing them in York never got very far. But now they are on the agenda for my first formal meeting with the new Chief Constable in a few weeks time.

Grahame Maxwell: agenda
"The use of speed cameras is more widespread for other councils outside York and the pitfalls in terms of their public acceptability are much better known.

"We would not use cameras as a revenue generating exercise but would be very selective with our placement of them.

"We would be talking about placing the speed cameras where there has been a proven accident record and where speed is a factor.

"Obviously places like Stockton Lane where there has been a fatal accident fairly recently will be the kind of area that we will be looking at."

Adam Briggs, Deputy Chief Constable of North Yorkshire Police, in charge of road policing, said: "Speed cameras are on the agenda but I would want to consult with the community before any decisions are taken."

And North Yorkshire Police press officer Ron Johnson said the capability and capacity review being undertaken by the police was still ongoing.

Pressure from York City Council also comes following a survey of 1,600 residents which found that about 80 per cent were in favour of using speed cameras.

Nigel Ayre, liberal Democrat candidate for Heworth Without, carried out the survey over a period of fours weeks.

Coun Ayre said: "80 per cent of residents I surveyed are now backing the deployment of speed cameras at accident blackspots.

"Many people, while welcoming the flashing signs on streets like Stockton Lane, still feel that speed is an issue on this and other roads.

"I am asking the local police commander to undertake speed enforcement checks on the roads that residents have highlighted."

Labour leader David Scott said: "The Chief Constable should remove North Yorkshire police's objections to speed cameras.

"Over the weekend we have heard of a number of crashes where speed has been the factor and action does need to be taken.

"It is of great concern to me that residents want something used by other areas of the country and the anecdotal evidence is that it is useful for them and I cannot understand why North Yorkshire does not have them.

"A holistic approach should be undertaken to determine the placement of speed cameras and primarily they should be used for accident black spots not revenue generation.

"I am aware that Stockton Lane is a black spot and in my ward of Clifton, there have been many reports of speeding down Burton Stone Lane and we are looking to see what can be done about it."

Conservative leader Ian Gillies was not available for comment at the time of going to press.

Myles O'Gorman asked people in York what their opinions were about speed cameras.

Paul Lee, 46, of York, said: "I'm for them; they're there to save lives. But they should make the fine steeper and not deduct points. If there are no cameras then there's nothing to stop drivers going at any speed they want."

Nicolas Cecchella, 27, of Malton, said: "I'm for them as they reduce speed and save lives. But in York there's no need for them. Compared to other areas, York is very safe."

Greg McCuw, 17, of Selby, said: "No, I'm against them. The council is just using them to make money. They should increase the police presence on the roads instead."

Paul Hunt, 25 of Leeds, said: "I'm for them in built-up areas such as York and in 30mph zones because they provide protection for kids playing. The system itself is fine."

Before I make any comment, I would like how this owuld work with tragard to money - who pays for the installation, and who decides how much money there going to get to do this?

You can see where I'm going on this one...

They wouldnt just end up on blackspots - they would end up on the wide open 40 zones that should be NSL. Expect the misleading 'killed OR seriously injured' statistics to crop up soon enough.

Time to buy a snooper then frown

Story is on Look North tonight - lets enjoy a nice unbiased report.

Leeds Is West Yorkshire.

North Yorkshire covers the area above and to the side of Leeds - as you head north towards harrogate and North East towards Leeds. Where I live (Garforth) is W. Yorks, 4 or 5 miles East becomes North Yorkshire

In West Yorkshire there are 5 humans to every sheep, in North Yorkshire 5 sheep to every human ... also, you are apparently never any more than 10 miles from a Tetleys pub! Which to be honest, seems a bit far for my liking biggrin

those odds may be a bit less now for the sheep per person ratio, on our run out we saw a sign saying "150 sheep killed last year"... lol.
Dave(greensleeves) response was a cracker too..."what about the 150 poor sods who's cars they knackered!?!"

I thought Scotland was Englands largest county wink

She hasn't even been gone 6 months and we have had Operation Helical and now the push on Speed Cameras. When the roads round here are safer than anywhere else around.

I can guess they will be all over the A64, A19, A1. As they are the areas of the erm......"accident blackspots"

NE Lincolnshire doesn't have any fixed speed cameras, or does N Yorks not have any mobile cameras either?
