What is it with arrogant trades people? Argh!!
Discussion
Folks Im sick to death of builders / roofers
Why is it they cannot say sorry mate Im too busy? Does honesty exist in this line of work?
You make an appointment and take time off work and wait and wait and wait - you ring to find out where they are and get some cock and bull story about the van breaking down or another client whose job ran over!
No phone call from them to say theyre going to be a no show!
And people dare complain about the service my folk give.
This inst a one off - Ive been stood up by 3 now.
All I want is a chimney damp proof spraying and my ridge tiles repointing
Anyone out there up for the job? - A reasonable days work for a reasonable fee

I have to admit, I've just employed a team for a new business venture and to tell you the truth there is another side to the story.
I started to advertise for 'general' building work while another project was waiting to complete and all I got the call out for was people wanting to scam the insurance companies or wanting the job done on the cheap. I'd tell the customer current legal regulations but they all wanted building work without going through the correct procedure. I can't compete with the 'cowboy' builders quotes as they'd quote the job over the phone, get the work and then up the price when on the job. Another problem I found was that no customer wanted to pay VAT, everyone wanted a 'price for cash'. Not the way I want to do business so even at the most competitive I was always 17.5% more expensive. Most of the time we ended up going to quote the job at the time arranged and the customer wouldn't be there!!! You soon tire of unreliable customers.
I've seen it from both sides of the coin and BOTH sides aren't blame free.

Aint that the truth. You would have thought that if there are enough people out there wanting to pay sensible money for a sensible job, and if there are enough people out there wanting to do a sensible job for sensible money, then surely they might be able to get together? But how?
I blow out more than half of my incoming leads, because it's just folks wanting absolutely the cheapest, in any way or form. Of the half that I do appoint and work, only a couple of them will be any good, the rest will also be looking for an angle on price, to the detriment of all other considerations, and not be interested in hearing a pitch about quality or spec.
It's a chicken and egg thing for sure (Well, they're not comparing eggs with eggs).
Forget the price
I cannot get a sod to come here
They make an appointment and then dont turn up
Its infuriating when you take time off work.
Whats even worse is when its some cheeky sod whose sent you a leaflet saying "I see youre having a planning application. Can I quote for the work?" Why then not turn up - Jeez its so annoying! I will pay VAT and allow scaffolding to protect the worker!
Anyone then Nr York to quote me?

Cheeky buggers responding when you have planning app.
We needed the ridge tiles replacing and I lost count of the tossers that didn't turn up to have a look at the job. Didn't even get as far as a quote.
These people just do themselves down, will slag everysingle one of them and they won't get a second chance. If they don't want the work, they could at least say so, rather than saying the will come round.
I am sure there is plenty of work at the moment, but come the hardtimes these clowns will be running scared.
Arggh!
Another on monday - wrote to me re planning
I telephoned him and told him of the job
I said if it aint for you then please say so
"Ill ring you back MATE"
MATE? - F off! - knew I wouldnt get a call back and I havent
Scanning for new contacts - internet, phone book and personal contacts.
Maybe an advert in the local paper?

Could I suggest doing a search on Polish builders or look for maintenance rather than building work as a catagory. There are usually a few 'maintenance' guys around who will do the smaller jobs.
By the way I suggested polish builders as I've used them in London and they are slowly filtering across the country, so must be in Leeds by now. In my humle expeerience they were on time, honest, finished on time and stuck to the price, despite a few unexpected things occuring. Technically they were also spot on. They also declared there income/paid VAT etc. On top of that they were cheaper. I'm not saying all polish builders are great but the degree of BS appears to be less.. As ever you pays your money and takes your choice.
PS I've just heard a polish building companies has started up in Kirkstall.. (nothing to do with me by the way)
cheers
