Scott, Your email is bouncing everything I send you.

Fibreglass shells

To the best of my knowledge they never have done.

You can get wings, doors, boots, bonnets, perspex windys etc but I've never seen a fibreglass shell and I've been at them for 22 years now. I'd be interested if anyone else knows about them though.

Howdo fella

I have no idea why its bouncing everything back mate, but it is Hotmail so I guess it does happen!

If you need to try a different addy, kick an email off to this address:

Scott . Downey @ btinternet.com (remove spaces as usual)

Right:

I dont know why, but I thought I saw one on the t'internet t'other week, but its entirely possible that I saw a full Mini FG shell and an advert for Escort FG bits back to back

A friend of mine was looking into building a new project and one of the things was to see if there was a full FG shell for them, but seeing as there isnt, maybe the plan will have to change a little bit.

Next question (hehe)

What does one have to do to get into Rallying?

Depends what you're interested in.

The answer is pretty much the same in all instances and that's to join your local motor club. I don't know exactly where you live but we (Wakefield & DMSC) meet at the Parklands Hotel every Wednesday.

When at a motor club, you need to sit with the group that does most of what you're interested in. We are mainly a competing club but we do have a pretty strong marshalling section if that's what you want. Marshalling is possibly the best way to learn the ropes.

If you're competing, there are two types of rally drivers. 1, Those with cars and 2, Those without.

Those with cars are referred to as "drivers"
Those without are referred to as "Navigators"

Navigators are much better drivers than "drivers" but just don't get the opportunity to prove it!

If you want to get involved as a navigator and are prepared to stump up the entry fee, own a pair of overalls, helmet and are quite handy with the paperwork, then you're any driver's best mate! An ability to shout out the corners correctly is an added bonus but the entry fee is pretty much a deal clincher.

If you're driving and have a car that you think is ready to rally, now is the time to get it looked at and laughed at before you enter anything as it's a bit embarassing when a swarm of scrutineers are standing there laughing at it!

Have a proper look at mine for a few tips and an idea of the budget you'll need.

roflThat tickled me

Ever since I told you about my project and you said "Come with me and Rally it" its been rattling around this empty space in my head. Rally Driving is something Ive always wanted to have a crack at, but I cant do any of the Rally Driving Experiences that you can readily buy as they have an anti fatbloke policy that means you have to be under 18 stone....which I aint frown

Its one of those things I aim to do once in my life and I think Id be better at avoiding the trees and speccies rather than shouting from a piece of paper hehe

The Tasmin will be H/C'd hopefully next season and maybe a couple of track days and maybe a round or two of the Tuscan challenge in a couple of years, but rallying really does float me boat

Come and have a ride up and down our "lane" one day. See if you have a penchant for it. You're not getting the keys but it will be an experience. Ask Kenyon! We had a little run last year on the Jenny Wren supercar rides day.

I can understand the natural hesitation to hand over the keys...afterall, if I bin, it costs!!

Drop me an email with some address details and I'll see about popping over as I would love to experience it all

I know that Ive been thrown about in a Mk2 Escort before thanks to my late cousin and his rally prepped 2.1 pinto powered beast, but we never did any greenlaning if you know what I mean yes

If you're after something interesting, then I know someone selling an extremely rare Hewland 5 speed dog engagement box in a Ford 2000E casing. smile

Guess you need to buy a twincam Escort first though, eh? hehe

i suppose every cloud has a silver lining scott! wanted a mk1 or 2 as my first car but the cheapest they'd insure a 17 year old on a 1.3mexico third party only was £2000 shame! i still toy with the idea now but id need to use it more than it'd be able to cope with

I can fully appreciate that Mark, Ive always wanted a Mk1/2 Escort ever since I was a kid and my cousin took my playing in his Rally prepped Piton engined beast....never had so much fun. Thing is they're expensive to buy (well, relatively) and insure for younger chaps

Maybe one day
