Stocksbridge - what's it like to live there?

don't have direct experience - but...
It will be like a lot of places - good parts and bad.
Ther place is/was a steel town but most of it has declined which has cleaned up the area no end, but also means the its kept prices down.
Even though its a reasonable size place its rural really with excellent links to some nice countryside. The downside will be access to more organised leisure activities (cinema multioplex etc) will probably be limited although Huddersfield, Barnsley, Dewsbury, Sheffied will satisfy those but at the obvious cost of distance.

hahaha very funny you guys - but as I'm a Bakewell girl originally with family links to Norfolk, I've actually got that part covered. Tee hee.As for the other points, I currently live in Walkley, Sheffield, so it would be quite a bit nearer the M1 for the all-important Railway pub meets. I work across S. Yorkshire too, so the transport links help. I'm not too bothered about access to cinema etc (am too busy waxing my VX in the evenings for frippery like that) and am usually knackered after work anyway.
what's the traffic like in a morning and evening getting in/out of there? at the moment I spend ridiculous amounts of time queueing through bloody Hillsborough to get home/to work, so anywhere that negates that HAS to be good!
I suppose its ok really, like said before, there are some nice bits and some run down bits. Not overly sure what traffic is like in Stocksbridge itself, but I live in Worsbrough which is near the end of the bypass and its usually pretty quiet compared to any part of Sheffield.
Plus between Worsbrough Country park and Stocksbridge there are some cracking empty roads for your VX220! (by the way, shouldn't you spend more time driving it rather than waxing it?)

Put it this way, I would rather live in a terrace in Walkley than a 4 bed detatched in Stoksbridge.
Your house will decrease less in bad times and increase at a greater rate in good times.
Now would be a good time to buy especially if you are moving to a more expensive property. You can still buy reasonably in the better parts of sheffield if you look and are prepared to do a bit of DIY.

Thanks for all your help with this. We've looked at a few in Stocksbridge but have come to the conclusion that it's not for us. So we're now looking even further out towards Hoylandswaine etc. Rob works in Hudds while my office is in Nether Edge so we are trying to split the commute time in half. If anyone stumbles across a farm/house needing lots of work but with huge garaging facilities, do let us know! Ta v much.
hahahaha no - we just didn't think we could survive with only a Lidl and a Co-op to feed ourselves from. And now you come to mention it, there did seem to be an inordinate number of shabby and (ahem) rather large people shuffling around aimlessly waiting for community buses. I'm sure they're all very nice, but we now fancy something a bit more rural - quaint but quietly sophisticated - you know the type of place? Somewhere ex-city young profs like ourselves can drive our noisy sports cars round single track roads at hair-raising speeds, frightening all the cows, and with bags of Waitrose shopping strapped to the roof. How decadent!

There is a nice house for sale in Fulwood at the mo - needs a bit of work but seems to be a bargain. If only I could remember what the road was called 
Stocksbridge isn't that nice - I'd stay in Walkley personally and put up with the dire commute.

No not really there's alot of traffic going out of sheff in the morning, but the real thing that add the time to the journey is the traffic lights, etc. through Hilsbrough.Walkley > Huddersfield, you're going against the flow of traffic both ways, aren't you..?

And then at the other end the traffic going into Hudds from the Sheff side is really bad by the time I get there as there's basiclly one road in from Sheff/M1.
The points are:
1. have to do the journey everyday, where as Jane isn't always in the office / has some flexibility in working hours, due to the shop floor/unions I don't
2. We need Garages / Parking for 4+ cars, somthing that ain't so commmon in Sheffield.
