Nice Pub/Restaurant North Yorks

Does anyone know of a nice Pub/Restaurant in the York/North Yorks area? Good home cooked food, not too fancy!! Willing to travel a distance (Im based in York).

The Windmill on the 1079 at Dunnington does nice home cooked pub food, the usual, fish and chips, bangers and mash, curry etc.

Further afield the pub on the crossroads in Rillington on the A64 between Malton and Scarborough does cracking pub quality food, as does the Lion Inn at Blakey between Hutton Le Hole and Castleton if you fancy a hoon on the way, cracking road and scenery and a warm welcome and a good pint at the end.

The Red Lion in Knapton (outskirts of West York) comes very highly recommeded. Excellent home cooked food and Black Sheep! You will need to book!

Nice run up from York as well on the B1363 towards Helmsley

forget the windmill, if you're in that neck of the woods the st vincent arms is the place to go in sutton upon derwent, B1228, past elvington airfield and keep on going until you see the pub, can't miss it.

chef/part owner adrian is a big car fanatic and there's often tasty cars there, most of the regulars (such as my goodself) like their cars.

i sold my pub otherwise i'd have recommended that, this is the place i choose to spend my cash now.

come on teebs, get yourself to The Stone Trough at Kirkham Abbey. You drive past it on the way to golf at Malton off the A64. Excellent food.

Cropton near Pickering has its own brewery as well
Had a Sunday lunch at Cherry Burton near Beverley last week and will recommend it.

I wouldn't recommend the Sandpiper, mainly because of the service and the arrogant tw@t that runs it. My parents have been there several times as part of evenings out with friends and work colleagues and have both vowed never to go back. I can't think of all the examples but mum went there for a work leaving do and a colleague complained that a pudding was still cold or something and the chef/owner actually came out and argued the toss that it was cooked, when blatently it wasn't. Quite a few locals think the same and won't go there because of him. The customer is always right? Not there it isn't.

Although up for sale at the moment, The Priory Guesthouse in Middleham does really good food and it's the place of my choice when I go home to visit mum and dad.

Simonstone Hall (country hotel) up near Hawes is also very good, currently going through a refurb, but I think it's back open in March. Drive up Swaledale and then take the Buttertubs Pass, which drops down into Wensleydale and Simonstone. If the weather is terrific then the views are stunning. As an alternative you could go to Reeth, turn right at the top of the green up to Arkengarthdale and Tan Hill, turn left just after the pub back to Swaledale and then over the Buttertubs. A great run, one of my favourites.

Have to confess I haven't been to The Sandpiper for years. It used to be good but I know at some point it changed hands. Crab and Lobster is my personal favourite although there are loads of good pubs around here.

I regularly blat up to the Buttertubs in the summer and often drive through Leyburn and out into Wensleydale for a drive. There are loads of great roads.

Personally I think the Sandpiper is great. My fav eating place in the area. Loverly atmosphere & great food. The only place I prefer over it is the Yorke Arms over near pately bridge.

It's been about 12 months since I've eaten @ The Blue Lion.... used to go quite regularly until the quality dropped off. I'm eating there again next weekend so we'll see how it is now.

If I'm wanting a drink I tend to drop into the CB Inn in Arkengarthdale & The Bridge Inn @ Grinton.

Ironically the Crab & Lobster is the place I hear more bad things about than anywhere else.

I don't doubt that the food at the Sandpiper isn't good, it's just the t0sser who run's it a lot of people have a problem with.

Yes, the Bridge Inn at Grinton is good. Have you tried the pub at Downholme? My dad went in there for a Christmas meal and it was very good, one of the places to eat at the moment apparently.

Crab & Lobster is a great indulgence if you can ignore the occasional pillock front of house, never had a disappointing meal there ever, but it hardly ticks the box for the OP's request for simple food

I would never have recommended the stone trough before because i owned the blacksmiths inn in westow which is about a mile further down the road from them and even if i do say so myself, we cooked the socks off them!

however I sold it and oddly enough my old head chef has just started working at the stone trough and he knows his way around the pans so it should be better now than it was.
