I am a little bit South of there at Great Heck. This area is still relatively undiscovered, house prices still reasonable with good road networks nearby and a lot less chavs than cities.
Some good quiet twisty roads in the area with not much traffic.

Born and brought up in Church Fenton was a lovely village then. I have some property there and we have had lots of problems with yobs, but I supose you get that everywhere now!

Monk Fryston is quite nice with a good pub and nice Country hall/restaurant.

As a general rule, the area you are interested in is quite nice compared to lots. there will always be groups of teenagers around, maybe more noticeable in smaller villages as they have less places to go.

Where will you be working?

There are many lovely smaller villages around this area and you could do worse than come up for a weekend and simply drive around a bit. East and North Yorkshire are great places to live on the whole yes

Been around this area for some 10 yrs now and commute to Leeds each day. Not a bad trip in & out, but time dependant on traffic etc.
Try Wistow, Cawood, Kelfield, Ryther etc as well as the places you have mentioned.
If you love the smells and sights that go with country living, its pretty good around here. You can be in the Dales, Moors and Wolds in 30-40 mins.
Yorkshire...God's own county!

I work in Rotherham and my wife works at leeds Bradford airport so this area is middle ground.

Had a drive round the area again on Sat. South Milford seems nice, well better than Sherburn. We still have a house to sell so that might take quite some time if all the doom sayers are right! But i am a country person at heart and love the twisty roads!

Once we are shut of our place the options are to rent in the area for a few months to get a feel for it or dive straight in!

but will deff keep you all updated on areas so i can take you upon advice etc!

I live just up the road in Barkston / Scarthingwell. Yes there are "yobs" in Sherburn, but the police have a regular presence and move them on.This is certianly less of a problem than Garforth/Croff Gates etc.

It depends what kind of residence your are looking for? One of the biggest assets is having the A64A1/M1link all so close, while yet being in the countryside.

We are not FTB but coming from Doncaster where you can still get a 3 bed semi with garage for 120 - 130 we are going to be looking at FTB aimed properties about 150k - 165k max. Being only 26 and the mrs 22 only going to be getting 2 bed and going to be living there for 3- 4 years before getting something bigger for family etc . .

We have looked at a new build in Hambleton this weekend which seemed quite nice but keeping options open and can only really start looking in anger when we sell this place

Persimmon are building just at the bottom of Sherburn, near the Bypass. Good range of new build houses which could suit your budget.

Lived in South Milford until 2 years ago, now moved into Tadcaster for catchment area to Grammar School. South Milford nice but has recently been targeted for massive housing expansion plan, and it seems that every farmyard, brownfield site is now being developed. Excellent primary but secondary = Selby High or Sherburn ( not very well regarded). Prices offered much better value than the golden triangle ( Harrogate, York, Leeds) but seem recently to have crept upwards. Sherburn always had a prro rep as being " rough" but I am sure that that is the same with most places. Church Fenton well out in the sticks, Ulleskelf nice, Towton nice but on main road for Bikers going to the "milk Bar" Stutton near Tadcaster very nice. As previous poster stated, some great roads esp B1223 to Selby. If you do not need habitation, I would think something on the "old A1" would suit you both a treat for commuting!
