Restaurants in York

Im taking my g/f away for weekend for her bday to york. Heard some good things about it and good night life.

Just looking if anybody could recommend any good bars, clubs & Restaurants to visit?

Were both 20 by the way, if age range effects it at all.

Were staying at the Airden House near the city centre.

depends what food you are looking for - seafood and good meats go to the blue bicycle, mediterranean bits try frankie c's. italian try delrios. If you want to go for some nice drinks try the living room / slug and lettuce on the river. further in town try oscars wine bar for drinks and afternoon meals. evil eye is good for cocktails - also a good bar for taking a bird to is the biltmore. all of those should be good with a bird in tow. enjoy!

Piccolino's has just opened across from the living room, very decent italian food and very central.

Avoid the Mana greek place - went for my 30th birthday - food was cold, staff agressive, my dish wasn't the one I ordered. Worst restaurant I have been to for a long time.

funny that - one of the worst meals I have ever been to was there - makes you wonder how they keep going when so many people say the same thing! we were in a group of about 20 and all of us left saying we would never go again-food terrible, staff surly etc...

I actually like Mana, the staff are rude, and i object to the service charge, but i love the food, maybe you both had a bad night there?

It all depends what kind of food you like, the nice thing about York is you can just wander the town centre till you find something you like, it isn't a large area and has a lot of restaurants.

Club wise is tricky, keep meaning to go to the converted church (priory??) Although believe that is more of a late bar than a club, but gallery can be good or bad, toffs always used to be a dive don't know if it still is or not. Bars and pubs however your spoilt for choice with, and daytime activites provided you don't want anything high octane there is loads to do. And if you want driving roads there are some Peaches around York and plenty of places to take a picnic to combine with a spirited drive.

Ah its not soon, start of september!

To be honest, im not too bothered about clubs, more nice bars and things like that really.

From what your saying though, sounds like there is a very large selection of places to go.

Just avoid the locals (they're the ones NOT admiring the scenery...more likely falling over or into it )

El Gaucho down Walmgate is the best place for a steak in town (about £50-£60 for 2 people including Wine)
Avoid the Blue Fly Lounge unless you like big men/steriods/drugs/a good ol' fashioned beating.
Vudu late bar (close to The Minster) is one of my favourites, generally a good atmosphere and the bar staff are excellent.
Avoid The Gallery like the plague
Oscars down Little Stonegate is great for the daytime, very relaxed, good food.
Kennedy's wine bar across the street from Oscars is good for a few drinks and family run, which makes a nice change.

Couple of cracking Asian restauarants... for flash looks and good food try Buzz on erm... road off Church Street can't rememebr it's name. If you want incredible food and aren't too bothered about flash decor Asia Gourmet on Gillygate is phenomenal!

Clubbing in York is sh*te... end of!

Pubs... depends what you're after, plenty of river fronters ifn the weather is good, bars round Little Stonegate usually have a good atmosphere too, if you want somewhere that serves PROPER beer try any of the York Brewery pubs... Last Drop Inn on Kings Square do a cracking sunday lunch.

Maybe most of their trade is from tourists. In some local tourist towns that I regularly visit I've been treated very poorly at most of the eateries. It's as though they think everyone's from miles away and probably won't be coming again anyway, so there's no point making an effort to treat them well.

If you like a good curry, Akbars on Rougier Street is fantastic. Masala Fish for starters is a must followed by Kheema Balti & Chicken Tikka Mix with Nan bread.

Each to their own of course, but don't understand why anyone would put up with bad service and prices when there are plenty of other places to choose from where the food is great AND you get good service.
