More hotel advice

First of all. Afternoon all.
I'm after some advice from you all if you don't mind. My wife and I have decided to spend a week or so in Yorkshire next year as the main part of our summer holiday. Don't know anything about the area other than it's huge.
We quite like the idea of staying somewhere around Whitby/Scarborough as a base and are looking for hotel recommendations.
Criteria.
Nice location, with plenty of places to eat within a short distance so as not to be reliant on where we are staying.
Must have off road parking. Not too bothered about it being completely secure but don't fancy leaving the car dumped at the side of the road.
We normally travel to the states but fancy a change this year but don't want to spend so much money on a UK hotel that we could go to the US for less.
What to see where to go?
Open to suggestions on this one. Wife fancies going to see where Heartbeat and Emmerdale are filmed just to say been there done that.
Lastly.
Been recommended Bank Villa in Masham. Anyone know of it? If so what's it like and how is it placed for doing the whole tourist thing.
I know this is pretty vague but appreciate your help in advance.

Best Hotel for me - for doing the dales touristy thing - is the Blue Lion at East Witton
No need to shop around for food as its the best - get set in, enjoy the food and the beer. Good wine list too.
Ensure you have their plate of desserts.
A stack of things and places to visit nearby including the Brymore Ice cream parlour
Well thats 3 days done

Cool, had never heard of it before but we have just booked that place out including all the rooms plus the rooms in their other hotel for our Christmas do! No need to shop around for food as its the best - get set in, enjoy the food and the beer. Good wine list too.

Masham is quite a distance from the Whitby/Scarborough coast if that's where you want to go, although it is probably best placed if you want to do dales and coast stuff.
Around the Whitby area you've got some really nice picturesque villages such as Robin's Hood Bay, Staithes and Runswick Bay - although I can't recommend any particular hotels. The Heartbeat villages are nearby (Goathland) and the North York Moors Railway (Pickering to Grosmont, calling in at Goathland) is worth a ride.
Castle Howard is not too far away (this is where Brideshead Revisited was filmed) and is one of my and my mum's favourite stately homes.
Further afield are the Yorkshire Dales (Wensleydale, Swaledale, Wharfedale, to name a few) so lots of walking opportunities there. If this appeals then let me know what your intersts are and I can probably suggest lots to do, where to eat, roads to drive.
Emmerdale was originally filmed in a village called Esholt, north of Bradford, but the (closed) set now is on the Harewood House estate (between Leeds and Harrogate).
Obviously York isn't too far away either and is a lovely city. There's lots to see and do, including the Minster and National Railway Museum.
