For those who don;t travel it that often the Leeds outer ring road between Harrogate Road and King Lane has been reduced to a 40 MPH limit. Why is anybodies guess and the signing isn't very good either.

Yeah I noticed as I was flying down it! I soon slowed down! But the signage isn't exactly in your face is it?

I think it's because they're adding a pedestrian crossing about a third of the way up from the Sainsbury's end.

Its just brought the speed down from 80 - 70. 90% pay no attention as it is exactly the same road as before except in 2 years they will have finished installing a crossing in the middle of so all the little fkers can spend all there spare time stopping traffic on a main road for fun.

The best Sci-fi writers in the world couldn't make this incompetent st up. I predict within 2 years they will have the rest of that section up to the police station down to 40 as they are too retarded to drive anything bar a shopping trolley round Sainsburys if that. They will have chicanes/speed bumps down there soon.

And the 40mph signs at the Sainsburys side are right behind the give way sign so you cant see them. Watch out for police cars waiting by the little side road by fir tree school.

Well, as usual they build a ringroad to improve the flow of traffic and keep it out of the town centre, and then build every kind of 'out of town' development all the way round it to totally screw it up. wkERS ! mad

about 10 people killed on it in the last year I think that is the reason

just look at all the flowers on the roadside fresh ones every week

No amount of speed limits will alter the behaviour of a tiny minority of idiots/criminals, who are likely to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs and probably driving a stolen car. Cutting their right hand off after the second offence, and their balls after the third might save on flowers and further tainting the gene pool though.

Thats my worry too, although when it's busy the average speed up there is about 50mph anyway. One gimp in L2 turning right up into Adel will stay there all the way from Sainsburys... doh.

It is a bad stretch though, but as I have often seen, the crossing won't be used. We will still see people crossing further up and down from it. I still see people making a mad dash 75 yards down from ZEBRA bloody crossings... some people just like to play lemmings for real.

Ultimately though, as others have said, they have ruined the ring road. It's not really much good anymore because it's been too heavily spattered with limit changes and developments... only on an evening is it really effective at getting around Leeds quickly.

Personally I would have made a few pedestrian under-passes, basically one at 1/3rd the way down, and one at 2/3rd, and then put fences right down the road side to prevent people entering the carriageway. No doubt the latest errection of all those bloody lights, control systems and fences, the speed limit changes etc, will have cost more, or will cost more in the long run, and the road is still under-served for crossing, and people STILL will cross in silly places and STILL get run over at 40-50mph instead frown

It *should* be like the Seacroft flats top to the Barwick section, dual carriagway with no entry to pedestrians and a footbridge over the top.

If people don't like all the fences, tough. The ring road has probably been there longer than they have!

Agreed....and all the extra road furniture simply further distracts drivers and makes it more likely that they will run over one of these suicidal pedestrians.

Underpasses/overpasses are the answer, but the council will whine about the cost, meanwhile wasting the same amount of money on unecessary sign posts, road markings, etc.

Wouldn't that be a good reason to re-introduce the Tufty Club
and teach people the Green Cross Code?

I have seen plenty of people cross there wearing black in the pitch black even a cyclist pulled straight across people in the pitch black.

I don't know the circumstances of people getting injured there, but giving a false sense of security by (eventually) putting up a set of lights that will be ignored by a number of people (going to fast, not paying attention etc) will probably end up with more people getting knocked over.

But with the state of peoples crossing when i have walked and driven down there it is unsurprising that people have been knocked down.

If you have a 70mph dual carriage way that curves round a corner (so you cant see the people standing to cross until nearby) and iirc there is a bus stop where the crossing is as well. The crossing goes from an area of (council) flats (not the nicest place to walk past) through a small gap in a hedge to the path on the main road, the gap in the hedge is now huge after the work to make the crossing massive, with all the cars going past, just ready for a small child to walk/ride a bike straight into the road, previously they wouldn't have noticed the road.

The other side are woods and grass, no path along the road except at either end,to get to the crossing and unused bus stop and from the side road with fir tree school to the roundabout at Harrogate road. You walk through the trees and get to the fir tree road.

By Sainsburys there is a walk over so you can cross the road perfectly safely above the traffic as well as crossing at the start and end of the section. Crossing in the middle of the road is just dangerous, you would only do it to save walking to the end of the road. The road should stay at 70 and the gap should be blocked off like the rest of the central reservation. It is probably only there for the bus stop so people can cross over there, the bus stop should be removed as well. Poor design.

It will cause chaos when the lights are working and all the kids spend all day playing with them. It will cause an increase in fast moving traffic past the fire station for certain as well as down Harrogate road to the also recently numptified section of road there.

Also no signs were put up on any surrounding roads to say anything about the limit changes, hence most people didn't notice for a while.

They took down the 40 limit signs near fir tree school, but didn't put up the big 40 signs at the start of the road so it was 70 all the way down, that was interesting.

Quiet.... Don't mention that or the council will build a second crossing 75 yards from the first one for all the lazy feckers that can't be arsed to walk the 75 yards. (just like they've done in the city centre)

hehe

Well, I mainly only go down there to go down into Bramhope the back way, but I've found going out along H'gate Rd and then along Alwoodley Ln is better now, two 40mph sections, that you REALLY can go 40mph along, and are quiet too... rather than a long drawn out 30mph section and a now reduced to 50mph DC with bloody traffic lights on it. (yep, just worked it out, 4s quicker in theory the long way, and I know from driving it often now that you CAN go 40mph almost constantly end to end, the other way you have to stop, wait at roundabouts, more lights, etc etc)

Way to go Leeds City Council. Offer a superior faster route down lower classification roads, while jamming up the 'main' road with junctions, lights, crossings, and other junk to make it not a main road at all.

Some road planners, or more likely their Nu Labour socialist managers, need a slap biggrin
