restaurant in hull?

my parents are coming over at the weekend and they have said they will treat me to dinner if i can find a nice restaurant. despite living here for 2 years i have never ventured out that much so am clueless where to go.
with it being the 14th i'd rather not be the single guy having dinner with his parents in a cosy restaurant with a load of loved up couples, so nothing too intimate please!
i was thinking of mr chu's as i read the was one of prescott's favourites when he was on a binge
is it any good?

If you don't mind venturing out as far as Hotham (near North Cave) then the Hotham Arms is very good for food, atmosphere and a very jovial owner.
A bit closer in Hessle, you have Artisan on The Wier

A very good restaurant with superb food but they well be booked up.
A more relaxed option is "Ask" at the far end of Princes Quay and overlooking the Marina.

My 2p -
I seem to remember Medici's is quite expensive and a reasonable way out, but it is nice.
The Prince's Quay ASK is an easy option and pleasant enough.
Quite a few decent pubs round that way a bit further out, if your parents are visiting though I guess you'll be looking for somewhere relatively close.

Luciano's on Carr lane in Hull isn't bad and nearby, the Gainsborough Indian restaurant does (well did, hopefully it still does) everything half price on a Sunday.cs02rm0 said:

i walk past luciano's quite regularly, i always thought it was a coffee shop!
italian with the parents will be a nightmare. they tour italy quite often in summer and have been to some amazing restaurants there. i couldn't put up with the comparisons tbh!

If you're into Italian/Mediterranean then try San Luca (the old Ferryboat Inn) in Hessle which has always served us well, although it always seems to get overlooked by local foody types. Not the best location by a long way but the service and food have always been great. From a food point of view I'd put it up there with a few of the better local restaurants but unlike the others it has never fallen down on its level of service to us.

Probably the most upmarket restaurant in Hull (and surrounding area) is Skidby Mill House Restaurant.

If something a lot more informal and you want drinks afterwards the 'Lounge' has a large following on Prices Avenue. Food is cracking, and the specials board changes frequently.

Sorry but I have to vehemently disagree:
On the couple of occasions I've been to the Millhouse in the last few years, and I only went by someone elses invitation, I have simply confirmed everything I thought about the place. The food was bland and to be honest didn't even come up to the standard of some "boil in the bag" chains I've eaten at. Definitely no better than a good Beefeater or the like.
But worse than this was the attitude of the staff. It was quite clear that because we weren't driving a Range Rover and I wasn't over 40 and wearing a tweed jacket and "slacks" that they simply didn't even want to serve us. The staff were simply rude and just wanted to turn us round and get us out of the door as quickly as possible. One decided she didn't like the fact Mrs Mighty had put her bag down by her foot and so decided the best thing to do was to boot it under the table.
The Millhouse is the kind of place which lives of a reputation amongst a certain demographic which it will probably never lose, and is frequented by the above mentioned tweed-wearing, Range Rover-driving, past middle age, live in a quaint village, drive home pissed, wouldn't know good food if it jumped out and bit them HOO-RAHs.
Totally agreed on Thai House though. Woksoever and Wokever in Cottingham are good on the chinese front too.

San Luca (Hessle) is nicer than Medici in my opinion if Italian food in a convivial atmosphere is acceptable.
For finer dining, I'd also suggest Rowley Manor, Rowley, The Manor House, Walkington, Tickton Grange is getting some better press of late, Nr. Beverley. The Black Horse at Ellerker has always been a good 'gastro-pub' too.

Still both open. I've only been to the Hull one but thought it was good. Nice atmosphere with friendly service.HTH
