I am thinking Dalby Forest Go ape but My youngest daughter in about 1cm too short so not really worth driving up there to be turned around

White scar caves another possibility

Malton Camp? Flamingo land?

Dalby forest is nice enough for a walk/cycle ride as it is if the kids would like that.

Depends on what you/they are into.

A day with the chavs at Lightwater valley theme park near Ripon or touring a historic Castle/Abbey at one of the multitude of heritage sites. Helmsley, Pickering, York (Yorvik centre), Whitby (Dracula), a trip up Dales or over moors if great and quite a few streams to dabble in catching sticklebacks.

Cheers. Do you have locations for these streams on the moors?

We used to live not far from a great places and the kids loved that kind of thing.

Don't just turn up though or you'll be dissappointed- you need to pre-book tickets (although sometimes you can get them from Middleham)
It was a condition on his retrospective planning permission....

The steam trains at Pickering have been mentioned and if you go at the right time they have a war weekend theme with old military vehicles. Think this ties in with Eden camp which is worth a visit on its own.
Whitby is great but best in the winter when when its not so crowded.
Goathland is nice with the trains and the Heartbeat stuff but gets very busy, nice drive up there as a bonus.

Plenty of stuff to do in York itself.

Castle Howard is supposed to be good according to Burriana...and great for kids! If you don't want to go into the house a family ticket works out at a reasonable £23! smile

I see you can also book the tickets online now, which makes it easier. You used to be able to get them from the Tourist Information in Leyburn but I'm not sure that is still the case. If you go on a lovely day then it's a great day out and the kids (and yourself) will love it! I last went about 8 years ago and it had started to get a little more 'tacky' than it was in its earlier days. I used to spend many a day up at Tupgill in my childhood, long before Colin Armstrong created his folly.

Other things to do in the Wensleydale and surrounding area: There is Thorpe Perrow (near Bedale) and Sion Hill Park (between Northallerton and Thirsk) which both have birds of prey/owls. The Wensleydale Railway runs between Redmire and Leeming. Obviously lots of walking/cycling/riding opportunities and great roads. Castles: Richmond, Bolton and Middleham. Wensleydale Creamery in Hawes where you can watch them make the cheese.

Further afield you have Whitby, York, Durham, Skipton and the Lakes, which are all within distance for a days outing.

Thanks guys.

Beamish and fountains abbey look like good places to take them during the summer. Think I'l try out the wensleydale place out as well smile

must admit though I like the idea of just going out in the country somehwere finding a stream/river to sit by and letting the girls paddle and do what they want.

its a lot cheaper more fun

I remember many years ago finding a little place by accident somewhere near Harrigate but would never find it again now.

Agree! The river Cover is good for that. Near Middleham it is limestone flags so it's easy on the feet! You can park up at Pinker's Pond, just outside Middleham up on the moor and walk down and cross Hullo Bridge and then follow the river downstream. My mum and dad used to take me to a place near West Scrafton, just at the bridge. Further up river, past Woodale, there's a 'natural' parking place where a few people park up next to the river - it's just before you start climbing up again. Carry on up the road and you're on Park Rash, a 1:4 hairpin, and then it's downhill to Kettlewell and Wharfedale.

Coverdale is my favourite dale though smile.

If you go up the Stape road between Pickering and Egton Bridge there are a couple of streams with large fords in the road - fun to drive through in the summer. Plenty of off road parking and fairly quiet. Take a picnic and paddle in the stream.
Maybe have a look further up at Goathland and Whitby.
The road is easier to find from Pickering, going up past the railway station and is gated at one point. A lot of single track moors road as well. Sometimes go this way to avoid the holiday traffic on the A169.
Not a fast road but interesting.
Might confuse the sat nav a bit best take a map wink

Also off the Pickering - Helmsley road, turn off to Hutton-le-hole.Has a Folk musuem and is a really pretty village, got a pub and a couple of cafe's for a bite to eat, then from Hutton-le-hole, head up to Castleton enjoy the drive, and when at Castleton go down to the river and let the kids wear themselves out. Did that last week.....................although, without the kidshehehehe
Was a fun drive as well.

Castle Howard is good, been quite a few times now, just nice for a walk around, and the people in there are very good to talk to as well.

Forbidden corner will also be great fun with your kids!

Stump Cross Caverns is very nice, not sure of age of the kids.

National Museum of Photography, Film and Television in Bradford is very good

Yorkshire Dales Falconry at Settle is excellent.
