Decent cheapish restaurant in York

Hi all, looking for recommendations for a decent cheapish restaurant to take the GF to this weekend in York. Type of food doesn't matter, obviously want somewhere without any lairy stag/hen parties and don't really want to spend more than £60-70.

A very good restaurant, can get pricy but you don't have to have all the courses!

Oooh i think i'll keep an eye on this topic, im taking the mrs for a long weekend this weekend too.. keep the ideas coming.. and sorry for the thread hijack but what else would you recommend for sight-seeing?

You might feel old but go to Bettys if you want somewhere free of fools, they do some decent hot food and you can finish off with a Yorkshire cream tea, should come in at under £50 for 2 with drinks and 2 courses, might be a bit too much "afternoon tea" than a peoper meal though.

Good thread, i'll keep an eye on it as i'm hoping to be in York for a couple of days midweek in about 3 weeks while I have new suspension fitted to my car.

Adding to the general gist and quality of food and surroundings was number one priority which restaurant would you go to?

Probably looking at a budget of around £75-100 for 2 without drinks

And for those with true Yorkshire blood (the thrifty sort ) and like a good carvery, try the Anchor Inn at Whixley. £8 a head and a couple o' quid change out of a fiver for a desert.

Whixley is off the A59 between York and the A1 just past Green Hammerton.

Oscars is cheap and cheerful, if you like burgers they are stacked. Can't book and it does get packed.

Other one to try is Biltmore (sp), nice old building and good cocktails for the lady. May be more of a drinking establishment however.

Blue Bicycle used to be good but has gone downhill and is anything but cheap. Ate O clock is probably the best restaurant in town now but again - not cheap.

Oscars was good when it had the courtyard - guess the food will still be the same though eh? :-)

The Limehouse Restaurant is very good, I've been there several times and it never disappoints. Try and get a table in the back, the ones in the front are next to the door and it gets breezy!

Meltons Too is another recommendation, the tapas especially is great. If you fancy Italian there's a really good one called Piccolino's or something, its opposite The Living Room.

Yes it's not cheap, we found the food there very good just last week, each to their own.

I like ASK, in The Grand Assembly Rooms. OK, the food is like every other ASK restaurant, but the building is amazing. Cheap too, so more money for drinks after.

Also, The Living Room is nice as your over looking the river.

What’s the one called in the old girls school, with the piano in the conservatory?
