Had a chat with my district councillor this evening, he had just had a meeting with the Chief Constable.

Plans are afoot to introduce camera vans in North Yorkshire. Story given is that they would be targeting 30/40mph areas.

I thought we already had cameras.

Either car based - Tadcaster and Whitwell Hill being a couple of busy areas.

Then the ANPR vans, although is one that sometimes sits at Bilborough Top actually a speed camera van.

There is plenty of use of cameras, with the associated invitations to have a talk in a local Village Hall - or pick up a fixed penalty and points. This especially covers 30/40 zones - do they call it Operation Siren or something ?

What we don't have is fixed cameras. What you describe may actually be a shift towards a van based camera. That's not much different to a police car etc - but will of course likely be unmarked !!

No plans for fixed fixed cameras (gatso etc) but yes cameras in vans as opposed to police cars. I'm told that there will be road markings when they are used (so presumably a number of specific sites).

This is a change though - I think North Yorks is the last county not using camera vans. I wouldnt have a problem with them in 30limits, but the way that other areas have manipultaed limits and used them to raise revenue rather than tackle dangerous driving does rankle.

Don't kid yourself. We have an unmarked ( totally unmarked ) van in the Scarborough area, and it definitely doen't patrol the 30/40 MPH roads, and it doesn't have a marked area to park up in either. It simply goes where it is most likely to get maximum revenue. The operator of the camera also has no hi-viz jacket on show either. Very sneaky.
