PH Pub Meet....Time for a change?
Discussion
I believe there was a zero turn out at Monday’s meeting? This confirms my thoughts that this meet needs a radical re-think.
For what it’s worth here are my thoughts on the subject. These are only my rambling thoughts, so please feel free to blow holes in any of them!
The first thing I wanted to say is that there is no point reorganising the PH Pub meet if it’s simply the case that people don’t want to attend a local meet anymore? Maybe it has just run its course? If this is the case I suggest we just call it quits and move on.
My feelings are that I would like to continue attending a local monthly meet but perhaps at a new location as it keeps me in touch with like minded people.
I believe it was started as a West Yorkshire meet and it should stay as such. If you move it too far (let’s say somewhere up the A1) then people will simply not attend in any sort of numbers?
Anyway, before we can agree on anything I think the following questions need to be answered:
1. Do people want a PH monthly meet?
2. Where should the meet be located? (Not a venue but location, for example somewhere with easy access from M1, M62 and A1?)
3. What’s required from the venue?
4. Is it an all year round meet or just for the spring and summer (April to September?)
Once these questions are answered then I think we could narrow down a meeting location with a suitable venue?
Cheers. BB.

How about Sunday morning meets ? this may restrict where you can meet, i.e pub car parks on sundays tend to get quite busy .... so other alternative venues maybe ... Yorkshire sculpture park ? ?
or if back to the evening meets
Location wise, nice roads, easy for motorways - Chequers at Ledsham - White Horse at Ledston both have decent size car parks ...... cancel my early thoughts on Squires - bikers dont seem to like cars turning up there it seems .

Different people want different things. I can't make them regularly anyway (been to about six in 18 months) and am only interested in the summer ones.
If you're looking at a change of venue I'd suggest J32 (Xscape). Just off the M62 at Cas, close to the M1 and A1 too. Huge car parks but bars and restaurants too if people want that sort of stuff. However, when I've been to the meets at Drig most people seem to just stay in the car park and talk cars, so don't think the "attractions" are important. The setback about J32 is it'll probably be as cold as the current venue.
Just my thoughts...

think it would be better on a weekend, i work away all week so the only chance for a meet is a weekend for me

what about an east meets west get together? two starting points and a meet up somewhere in between.
could end up two nice convoys and a very large group of cars in the end.
maybe two or three times a year? would be a nice way to meet up with other ph members from other areas of yorkshire

And until you get sorted out, anyone is welcome at the East Yorks pub meet
Personally I think that has partly been the downfall of the West Yorks meet is that a good number of you guys were from East Yorks and it's a bloody long way to travel now you have a local meet.
As stupid as it sounds, I actually miss seeing Al being his usual animated self at the Railway
Squires has a good basis, but the amount of patrols up that way might be a hinderance or at least be off putting to some. The bikers dont mind car drivers turning up (I am one of the bikers up there lol) but I know on certain days it's packed out (wednesday especially) and wouldn't be able to acommodate both.
I wont be attending many more Railway or yorkshire meets though as I'm moving to Leicester so will try their local fayre

Just been to the one so far (but hopefully go to more). As I'm on the bike it'd just be Summer months, and maybe others would rather not travel a long way in the Winter months.
To be fair the Railway is a fair 'ol way for some to come. It's fine for me TBH as it's only a couple of miles.
As Scott says Squires is a good location, but he points out that there are alot of plod around.
I'd say it's mainly Wednesday and Sundays that they're knocking around as thats the biker days.
And the Bikers aren't really bothered about cars at Squire's that much I'd say, as long as it's not one of the Bike days (A quick phone call/word may sort that out).
Anyway, I think the meet shouldn't just die IMO.

The problem is, anywhere is a fair old way for some to come. Being a Yorkshire meet, that's a pretty large area to cover, so people should expect to have to travel a bit. To be fair the Railway is a fair 'ol way for some to come. It's fine for me TBH as it's only a couple of miles.

I've not managed to make it to many of them due to work, but I like to attend when I can. Squires could be a good place for it, but it isn't really any different to the Railway and I think if you were to move it to somewhere like Xscape, you'd only end up with the local "cruise" turning up, which would make me think twice about coming and I'm sure others would feel the same.
Maybe keep it where it is, but add a short drive into the event. Meet there at 7:00pm, then at 7:15 go off for a 30-45min drive on local roads and then back to the Railway for a drink/snack/chat?
Whatever is decided, I'm sure I'll be there when I can, but it really would be a shame to see them stop.

Agree 100% and I thought that about the Xcape, but more about it just being a run down the 62 that can be quiet bland.I've not managed to make it to many of them due to work, but I like to attend when I can. A drive out before could be a good idea if it's changed a few times as to alter any regular route.
Or maybe a few "Special" meets in addition to the regular meet. Say a Sunday afternoon meets at Holme moss for an Ice cream in the Summer.
In an attempt to keep this subject moving forward, I have tried to summarise the opinions so far:
1. Do people want a PH monthly meet?
Looks like it’s a YES to this question.
2. Where should the meet be located?
Somewhere with easy access to motorways so PH’rs from most areas have reasonable access (30 mins travel absolute max?).
3. What’s required from the venue?
Shelter from the weather. Good parking where we can gather without too much interference from other motorists. Somewhere to get a drink, maybe some grub and use of the toilets. Have the possibility for some run-outs.
4. Is it an all year round meet or just for the spring and summer (April to September?).
April to September meets, and then maybe something more ad-hoc through the winter?
With this in mind, I make the following suggestion for comment:
Venue:
Innkeeper’s Lodge Leeds East,
Aberford Road,
Oulton,
Leeds,
LS26 8EJ
This place has several things going for it as it has good access for the motorways (2mins from Jn 30 M62). It’s got a bar, food and toilets and it has possibilities for informal run outs during the summer. It has a big car park with a private parking area that accommodates approx 30 cars. The private bit is sheltered and keeps us separated from Joe Public. Have a look at it on Google earth if you get chance.
Summer meetings (April to September) to stay at 2nd Monday of each month starting at 7pm.
Consider Winter meets (October to March) moving to 2nd Sunday each month starting at noon.
Ben, what do you think to all of this, as the meet was your idea in the first place, and I surely don't want to p*ss on your chips with this!
Cheers. BB.

But it was always intended as a WEST Yorkshire meet. That is why we also have an East Yorks meet as it is such a big area. Having said that the distance never bothered me. Jag-D said:

cheers Scott. To be honest, I'll tell you why I stopped attending after being there at the first one and in two years or more only ever missing two or three due to either holidays or Le Mans.
We managed to run it through two winters with no problem with attendances, we always had at least 8-10 people to sit round a table with and have a good chat and a laugh. But in the summer it started to get crowded with people's mates and mates of mates, none of who were active PHers, or even on PH at all, and it lost its "few mates getting together" feel.
Then people had the bright idea to get the car park full of nice cars, then sod off for an hour and do a tunnel run, thereby effectively emptying the car park/meet. The runs should have been done on the way there or way home.
To me, a pub meet should be a chance for the regulars who chat on forum to get together and have a sit down, few drinks and a chat in real time. It is not necessarily a car meet, it's a pub meet with the added attraction that there may be a few nice cars in the car park. Leave the big meets for Cars In The Park, Malton and all the club dos.
I know some people may not agree with me, but at least it gives you guys another perspective.
In my humble opinion, for West Yorkshire, I think Squires is a bit out of the way. You need something in the middle of the catchment area of Bradford, Wakefield, Pontefract and Leeds. How about the White Bear at the roundabout at J28 of M62, junction with Dewsbury Road, or the pub on the roundabout just at the end of the dual carriageway at Rothwell, 2 mins from junction 30 of M62. A lot more sheltered than Drighlington too.

I agree with a number of things said -
- Yes I want it to happen
- Fridaypassion has a good idea - Sunday Mornings over Winter, then back to evenings in Spring.
Note - my preference would be Sunday MORNING - noon is when people start heading ut to see Auntie Mavis, or to the football, or whatever. Getting up early is a small sacrifice to pay.
- It should be 'local'. The EY lot have there own meet (which im sure we could visit!) - so it should be West Yorkshire - there is quite a concentration of us surrounding Leeds and Bradford.
- Al is right - it shouldnt be a 'park up and ogle at cars' meet.
It would be nice to be able to gather and create a little 'PH corner' in a pub somewhere to share stories, and maybe use as a forum for planning some good run outs next year, and to meet the people I chat with on here regularly.
- Squires/Xscape. No thanks - they have plenty of stuff going on already, Squires have a different car club there every night anyway -too much like 'cruise culture' at both venues.
- Lastly - how about we involve some eating into the mix...
Perhaps there is somewhere we could go and be able to make some kind of informal group booking - something simple where the cost can be shared or easily worked out between us - that would be great as a bit of an 'ice breaker' so we can all sit down, say hello, and talk over a bit of food and some drinks.
Perhaps a carvery/buffet type place would work well - as you just turn up and pay individually? We could get a table for us all.
