Off to the great Yorkshire show next week and fingers crossed will be seeing a rather charming young lass, anyone know a decent drinking establishment to take her to? Not somewhere really posh - we'll just be in "normal" everyday clothes - but equally not somewhere I'll need to take my knife to! A charming little country pub would do fine. Must be within 10-15 mins drive of the showground.

Suggest away, TIA.

I'm not too sure what traffic diversions will be in place, but the Kestrel is a very nice pub, just within your criteria. Very lovely food. My girlfriend recommends it.

On a side note, you'll do well to find anywhere you need to take a knife with you in Harrogate...

It's years since I moved away from Harrogate, but...

There's two pubs in Follifoot (somewhat nearby -- see below). Just ordinary village pub types of affairs, as I recall. I'm pretty sure at least one has a beer garden, though it's 10+ years since I last went. I'd imagine they'd be marginally less busy than the Kestrel -- I'm pretty sure Wetherby Road was always chockablock when the Yorkshire Show was on, so it's clearly on one of the favourite routes in.

Both are Samuel Smiths. I'm not personally a huge fan of the Samuel Smiths beers but they sure are cheap smile

You could walk to the Travellers Rest as you can see it is not far from the showground. If you follow the road down from the pub on Google maps you can see it goes to one of the entrance/exits to the showground.
You could give the pub a ring and find out how busy it gets on show days.
The Kestrel is a nice 'old' pub in only a ten year old pub can be but you might have problems driving in and out of the showground if the one way system is in operation.

You won't get near the Kestrel 'show' week, utter chaos on Wetherby road next to that. Try the Pine Martin, only 10-15mins away, big car park, cracking food etc

The Bay Horse Kirk Deighton. Black sheep, Golden Draggon and a bunch of other stuff. Pretty pricey 2.85 per pint but its a nice pint and about a 15min drive from the showground. Food is meant to be decent as well.

The ones in Follifoot are proper drinkers pubs I often go into these with my old man and the bottom one (harewood arms I think) is the best out of the 2. Sam smiths though but its cheap ale.

The star inn (think thats what it is called) in kirby overblow is decent as well. Think its owned by some ex leeds united player.

10 to 15 mins from the show ground during the Yorkshire show, you may get to Sainsburys which is next door.

Yeah, thought about that. It wont be at rush hour or show times though, probably later in the evening, and if all else fails I'll put her on the back of the bike. biggrin

Good shout, its a pub I used to work next door to so I know the village very well but have never been in. I also know the surrounding farmland very well, wonder if she likes it alfresco? hehe

Thank you for all your replies, i'll trawl through and pick one or 2 places.

The stretch of Otley Rd near this place is lovely, and even more fun to drive at night biggrin

Sainsburys is closed through the show. The land its built on came from the showground and its one of the terms that was enforced.

Good discounts if you shop there the couple of days before.

Aye from the Smiths Arms to Killinghall is quite good (heading towards Beckwithshaw is the best way, though IMO) but very short. Heading to Otley from Smiths Arms is an awesome and fairly quiet road, just watch where it goes very tight downhill left then right...!
