Just spotted E.Yorks police`s new pursuit car on the m62 just before j35 westbound.
Is a fully marked up Lexus IS-F (i think as I was travelling east)

I spotted this earlier as well. Iv seen it a couple of times on that stretch going eastbound its usually slightly further up though in the police pull off area.

What does the tractor do exactly?

Surely it is only useful to pull things.

I know it's fun for the bobbys driving them, but how to they get cars like this signed off? They don't actually need a 50k 5.0V8 Lexus do they?

I was told once they factor in costs of servicing, wear and tear, abuse, etc and also the get a preferential rate.

So with it being a lexus it probably will be more reliable than the BMW fleet.

Indeed but they don't need a 5.0V8 from any manufacturer, a 3.0TDI would do 155 and 60 in less than 6 secs and 40mpg instead of sub 20mpg. As I know they are bloody hard to shake off (3.0TDI's that is!)

Why?
Because they know a 3.0TDI can be outrun by a 5.0lexus, also they know people will post threads saying "be careful of this scary fast police car" which puts people off committing crime.

All about publicity, the tractor is a good example of this....

So they spend 84k on a police car, then pose in it for max power style photos, its not going to stop anyone from doing anything.

The tractor was/is a stunt to highlight rural crime this is a working police car and as such is a waste of all our money.

The police have radios and helicopters and use multiple cars to handle pursuits the fact that it will go 15mph faster than a 3.0TDI would make no difference in the real world.
