half term

I am leaving york on that day after 10 years here!

visit the minster
walk around the city walls
head out to the moors for a nice walk (good place to go in the moors is rievaulx abbey - massive ruined monastery)
the national railway museum is great (and free)
there are two other museums - I prefer the one in the museum gardens to the one by the castle (cliffords tower)

might think of more stuff later.

Another vote for the Railway Museum. I spent hours there and I don't even like trains! I'd say take a wander by the River Ouse and around the city walls too.

I think you'll be struggling to fill a week in York. May have to drive around a bit.

trips to the moors (as i said) and the dales.

the drive over the moors to whitby is a good one.

roobin hood's bay is much nicer than whitby or scarborugh which as far as I can tell are dumps. (whitby is ok though).

Get out of town a little bit and go to Elvington - either for the air museum ( http://www.yorkshireairmuseum.co.uk/ ) or to have a look at a track day session or two on the adjacent section of runway.

Eating - Rustique on Castlegate is good : http://www.rustiqueyork.co.uk/, Betty's is pretty much compulsory for tourists - but there will be an enormous queue.

Over the Moors from Pickering to Whitby springs to mind. The main road is good if a little busy, the quieter route is of course amazing fun. I can't remember the road numbers off the top of my head though!

Fish and chips in Whitby are good, but Robin Hood's Bay is a nicer spot. You can get good fish and chips down at the bottom near the beach, just off the road on an alley to the right.

Fountains Abbey is also pretty epic.

The best steak to be had in York is probably 'El Gaucho' on Walmgate, plus you've got to have Breakfast at Betty's just...because.

I went last week.

York Minster is OK, but a big cathedral at the end of the day.

The Jorvik centre is pretty good

Betty's looks good but there's a permanent queue for a table.

There's plenty of cake shops smile

There's a designer outlet centre just south of the city centre, didn't go in though

Railway museum is good

Use one of the park and rides to get into the centre. They're reliable and pretty handy. Parking in the centre is highway robbery.

Magpie cafe in Whitby isn't just good, it's worth the drive up there just for the food yes

Try the Little Bettys on Stonegate (about 200yrds away from Bettys). Smaller but sometimes shorter queue and a different type of building.
Ghost Walk if you want something fun (cheesy but fun)
Whitby as mentioned.
A walk around the walls. Pint in each pub that is next to the walls....
The Minster is epic but only worth one visit - try to go early, or when choir practice / organ practice is on - the acoustics are amazing.
Food: plenty to choose from.
Pubs: ditto. Kings Arms is good by the river if it's nice (Sam Smiths, marks up the walls from the floods - cellar is on the 1st floor)

Try The Evil eye lounge on Stonegate for some good Asin-Malay/Indonesian food day or evening.

leeds is a total dump compared to york... i don't know why you would go there from here except perhaps for shopping.
