Talking about the £99 open pitlane days.

Tempted to give it a go but I was wondering what the atmosphere and blend of cars was?

They're good fun, cheap & cheerful and very well organised. Javelin are an excellent TDO.

Noise limits are very strict (98db static and 89db drive-by) and the abrasive surface is very hard on tyres.

I used to attend them regularly, not so much anymore. These days I use Elvington to give my car a shake-down at the start/end of the year, always an enjoyable day though.

If you need to know anything else just ask and I'll try to answer as best as I can. smile

I've done a few. There is usually quite a mix of cars and when I've been to the midweek sessions it hasn't been too busy, especially once a few have broken down wink.

The surface is rough in places and quite abrasive, particularly the long right-hander into the straight which can eat tyres - I've started taking it easy round there unless I'm looking for a big number on the speedo. The coned course varies a bit from time to time but obviously being an airfield it is completely flat. There is lots of run-off just about everywhere.

Javelin do a good job, the organisation is friendly and efficient. You don't get Palmersport facilities but you're not paying Palmersport prices...

Done a number of days at Elvington, all with Javelin, well organized and good value for money, Colin who runs the day is fair and treats everyone well, I agree with all the comments, noise isna issue and they are quite strict on this, surface is very abrasive but plenty of run off which is great for first timers or a good shake down, as for the cars, I have a Ariel Atom and a F430 which I use at Elvington but three is always a good mix, and same with skill levels of drivers which makes for a good friendly day, my recommendation would be to give it a go, for the money it's a great day
Thanks
Glyn

Never hired one myself but I'm pretty sure I've seen them in the hut where signing-on takes place.

dont do it ....go to a proper track...elvington will murder your tyres..... been on a proper track is far more desireable than concrete airfields............

Done a few days at Elvington too, and its great fun. Helmets are indeed for hire in the sign in cabin, but better to check before arrival.

Yes the surface will eat tyres more than a circuit, the noise levels are strict and its an airfield. But if you want to play with less fear or armco etc I think its great smile

I did my first (and last actually) trackday there and thoroughly enjoyed it. There was a real mix of dedicated track hatches, supercars (and a tatty old Corrado smile ). It is hard on the tyres, depending upon how hard you take it! My friend's Lotus needed 4 new ones, I didn't.
I found it an excellent introduction to the limits of my car without worrying about Armco and other hard surfaces!

Cheers,
Tom

Regarding the track surface the front of my Chim was completely ruined by stone chips. I would not take my pride and joy there, IMO.

I've done a couple Elvington days - one with BAT, and one with Javelin. I may have been unlucky but the Javelin one was very very poorly marshalled. Lots of poor driving, and what was worse was that it was tolerated by the marshals.

I almost came to blows with one idiot in an M3 as I was in a queue of traffic - a GT3 and then me in my Megabird Westy - waiting to pass a novice in one of the Javelin MX5s. Said driving God decides that he's obviously much faster than the rest of us and does a do or die overtake down mine and the GT3's inside, forcing us both wide - thank god it was an airfield - all in full view of the marshals. He wasn't even flagged for a quick chat about his driving.

I'd be reluctant to use them again. BAT on the other hand are by far the best TD company I've used. Their marshalling is impeccable.

ETA - re the track itself. Very very abrasive, stone chips likely, but great for practising car control due to the huge run offs. A friends Elise required a front end respray afterwards.

Did you and your Megabird Westy mention this to anyone from Javelin?

No need for the sarcasm. I mentioned the car types to highlight the fact that it wasn't like I and the driver in front were in obviously slower cars.

And to answer your question, I did. They said they'd keep an eye the quality of driving. I didn't notice any improvement TBH.

On a TD overtaking should be by consent, and a slower car should always make way for a slower car where safe to do so. It's what makes for a happy and enjoyable TD, as it reduces the risk of turning into a car that you haven't seen - or being turned into. If you don't want to do that then take your NATB and go racing IMO.

I've done about 6 there with Javelin ... pretty much all been good days

Get the odd idiot, as you do at most trackdays I guess ... the "rented" car's seem to be the main problem people though

Good place to go if your car is slow ... first time I went my car was only 55 bhp & I easily managed to keep out of peoples way

Hmmm not keen on the idea of excessive stone chips and tyre wear.

Plan is to get a cheap track car in near future bit thought might try one in feb/march in my main car. Having second thoughts now...

If you're put off by the comments about stone chips and tyre wear at Elvington the nearest circuit to you is probably Croft. It's a nice circuit but the noise limit is relatively low. You'd probably be alright if your car has the standard road exhaust though.

I would question whether it is cheaper to do an Elvington trackday rather than say Croft when you factor in tyre wear? I got through £600 worth of tyres last time I was there plus the front of the car now resembles a gigantic dot to dot puzzle. Good fun though smile
