aye up
Got some business in Harrogate this weekend. Any recommendations for good pub/food in the Dales- will be around the Hawes/Leyburn area.

Friars Head, Akebar. Closer to Harrogate there is the Wellington at Darley. Have eaten at both and liked them, lovely settings, character, absolutely no pretence and proper grub!
There is a pub on the back road from Pately Bridge up to Lofthouse and there's a pub there called the Bridge Inn which was nice and honest the last time I went. That road can lead you to Leyburn.

The Old Horn at Spennithorne, a mile or two outside of Leyburn, does good honest food and my dad says the grub at the Cover Bridge Inn (between East Witton and Middleham) is better. Someone told me at Christmas that the Friars Head at Akebar was good - I haven't been for years.

For a more pricey meal there's the Wensleydale Heifer at West Witton (good for fish lovers) and the Blue Lion at East Witton.

Outside of Hawes there's Simonstone Hall, their Sunday lunches are good value and with great views over to Hawes.

Take the Griff or the XK.

From Leyburn take the road to Reeth.

From Reeth take the Arkengarthdale road to Tan Hill - highest pub in the land. The pub and the food is no frills welcoming, good and honest and you will not be disappointed.

Tan Hill to Keld then Thwaite. Just south of Thwaite take the right fork. You've found Buttertubs Pass.

When you get to the other end - turn around and do it all in the opposite direction. It's better still except this time you won't need to stop for a bevvy, lol.

Red Lion, Burnsall. Come off the A59 Harrogate Road at Bolton Abbey and head towards Grassington. One of the finest roads in The Dales, and sublime food in a beautiful location. The main opening shot of Emmerdale is of Grassington.
"Sublime"..... Strong word. Yorke Arms at Ramsgill (nr Pateley Bridge) is a lot closer to sublime. Red Lion, me thinks not.

Pedant mode on: most of the opening shots of Emmerdale (the aerial tracking shots) are taken looking down the upper parts of Nidderdale, such as Gouthwaite reservoir. One of places that can be seen next to the reservoir is the village of Ramsgill, where the Yorke Arms can be found. One of the places Steve Coogan visited on The Trip.

Also worth hitting the Angel Inn at Hetton (also on The Trip) plus the Sportsmans at Wath (just down from Yorke Arms)

This. But instead of eating at the Tan Hill stop instead at the CB Inn just a mile or so outside Reeth: the food is so much better than the Tan Hill.

If you want cheap and cheerful the Chippie on the main street in Hawes is pretty damn good.

Thank you. I've seen that chip oil open and thought how good can that be way up here, and kept on going. I won't next time!

Aye but Tan Hill the landlady there bottle feeds two sheep - so the drinks must be good even if the food's not quite so good, lol.

Back down South,
Stayed at the Blue Lion, East Witton-great food, good beer well worth the money.
Red Lion, Burnsall- Food, beer, accomodation- lets just say I won't be making a return visit.
Fish and chips in Hawes, good.
Roads/part time rivers excellent.
