Hi All

My first time in here so go easy!

I've started a three month contract just outside Harrogate so will be spending Monday-Friday in digs from next week (well, hotel next week until my digs are ready the week after). The digs I have are right in the centre, near East Parade.

Do we have any Harrogate PH'ers in the house? I parked next to a Caterham at work today, so it wouldn't surprise me if the owner of that was on here.

What's Harrogate like during the week for a 34 year-old male (married, happily!)? I'll be bringing my PS3 but I'd rather not stay in my room all night, every night. I'll be looking to join a local gym too if anyone can recommend one?

Any advice would be rayt!

Great part of the country and surrounded by superb roads.

I'm only down the road next to the airport.

Couldn't tell you what it's like during the week. There is a good blues bar next to Bettys if that's your thing.

Get down to mine a few nights in the week or I'll come to you. Give me a bell when you're sorted.

Our bookies and amusement arcade is open 'til 7

The kettle is always on there

Just on Station Parade / Beulah Street, opposite the bus station basically.

Harrogate has the highest ratio of women to men in the UK. Sadly this is because Harrogate is God's waiting room and chock full of gimmers waiting for the reaper and the women live longer than the men.

Did someone call smile

Yep, just moved back to Harrogate so if you see a big, red, really wide assed Fiat knocking around, that'll be me yes

As far as I can work out, there are not any cheap and cheerful gyms in Harrogate, they are all quite expensive. I think a couple of the hotels (Majestic rings a bell) have gyms that welcome non-residents, but probably best off Googling.

It is however a brilliant place to be, especially with spring now here. The busy bars are Pitcher & Piano and Banyan, both next to each other at the top of John Street which is a pedestrianised street with a cafe society outdoorsy feel. It runs between James Street and Albert Street (these are more Fri/Sat bars though)

Mid-week, The Montpellier at the bottom of Montpellier Parade (Down the L/H side of Betty's) is lovely to sit outside of, and along West Park is the Coach & Horses, another really good local.

Welcome to one of the loveliest towns in the country... oh, and it may seem daft, but if you are bored one sunny evening, go for a walk through Valley Gardens and simply admire the scenery and also the lovely architecture of the buildings around it.

I always think this is a classic British park. Tennis courts, paddling pool, RC boating lake, fantastic pay ground, etc.

What about Beckwith Health Club?

Not affiliated, I just happen to work in the same building, so know it's there.

And a few of my colleagues use it.

...and marvel at the constant trill of mobile phones as cottagers loiter in the bushes awaiting the next cheap thrill laugh

Thanks for all the replies, Chaps. I appreciate it.

I'm going to try and stay away from the bars during the week as I don't trust myself to not have a few too many, and these days hangovers just aren't worth it! I will of course try and sample a few of the restaurants.

wavey I'm working just behind there so that's a good call, Cheers. I'll drop in there tomorrow and see what the membership prices are like.
