I've went and snapped the mcgard locking wheel nut on my wheels.

Even more annoying is that half of it has jammed on the inside of the key so there's def no chance of me getting the other wheels off without ordering up a replacement.

Whats the best solution to getting these off, so far I've found this:

How the hell did it snap?

McGard have a website in germany for europe, very helpfull guys and once you get it off i would contact them and they will likely send you a replacement. They sent me a replacement key and a new set of nuts cause they couldnt find the right key for my nuts from the code that came with them without me sending them a nut back.

You have two solutions:

1) This is the one i used, weld a nut onto it and undo it with the new nut

2) Buy one of these tools

http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/...

Put it on an impact wrench clockwise, then put the impact wrench on anti clockwise

Which option depends on how much wheel nut is exposed still, how much clearence you have around the nut.

The method you showed doesnt usually work on McGard ones as they are completely round with no ridges, the pattern is all on the inside.

I've successfully used a 19mm double hex socket hammered onto what's left of a locking wheel bolt.

EDIT: I didn't view the link in the OP originally, was posting from the phone. As stated, that technique has worked for me a couple of times.

I no longer have locking wheel bolts due to hearing about (and experiencing) these problems too often.

Just to let you see:

The bit in the lock is jammed in solid and wont move so i'm buggered there.

All of the wheels had new tyres on fairly recently, most of the nuts were very very tight and were requiring a lot of effort to get them off.

Oversized socket and big hammer had my 4 McGards off in about 30 seconds each. Then pop em in the bin and replace with standard nuts. When you see how quick they can be removed they really are not worth the hassle.

Yes, they'll all be in the bin after this.

As per FB chief, i have left handed nut removers if you want to try them?

Will need an impact wrench of sorts to make good use of them though.

Hmm, looks like they've been torqued up a bit much!

Worth a bash though, 19mm single hex impact socket, and a hammer. A big one.

I've removed McGards that way before.
+1

And a vice, to get the bd out after. Been there, done that got the t-shirt. Pain in the tits. (No longer bother with locking nuts.)

Well tried battering a cheap socket on but there's not enough meat on the broken nut to get it held on securely enough. As soon as you apply enough pressure to try and loosen the nut it slips off.

bks. Did you try the other 3 like that? Save you paying someone else to do them.
Nope just the broken one, I've been in contact with mcgard and they will supply a free key under warranty

I had the exact same issue the day i was due to trade my car in. drove to a national tyres place and the guy there removed all four of them for me. he just hammered a socket onto whats left. took al fout off in seconds. kinda left me wondering what the point in locking wheel nuts were.

Nice one. Unless you can send them a key, or bolt, how do they know which key you need though? Do you still have the paperwork that came with them, with some sort of code on it?
there is a keycard or sticker that comes with them, you can go on their website type it in and they will send you a replacement for 17 euros or summit like that.

If you contact them directly and provide evidence that it has broken etc they will provide a free one. Obv if you've lost it you'll need to buy another.

Once my new key arrives i'll be taking all of the locking wheel nuts off. Once i've seen how easy it is to remove (an undamaged one) they seem pretty pointless

Finally off.

I used up a socket and in the garage they used two extractors to get it off.

Impact gun made light work of it and would be a recommended tool for the job
