Hello, I'll be starting a new job in Edinburgh next month and need digs 3 nights a week, it's a long contract so rather than suffer the Travle lodge I thought I'd try to get a flat share.

Anyone know the areas of Edinburgh to avoid? The office I'll be working in is North of the city on Ferry Road, near Crewe Toll, I'd like to be within walking distance.

Cheers

If you get anywhere near where your work will be then it'll be fine - the main areas to avoid are to the West of the city (Wester Hailes) and south - Niddrie.

Travelodge £10 sale started today. Most rooms in Edinburgh are £10/night til April - so probably worth going down the travelodge route tbh if the rooms are still available...

Cheers, i spent last winter in travel lodges in cheltenham and it nearly turned me into alan partridge, there is only so much takeaway i can eat! But the swines do make it very attractive with the pricing.

I'm from Edinburgh. There are no really bad areas of Edinburgh but Wester-Hailes or Sighthill aren't exactly nice.

Craigleith and Ravelston are nice. Granton/Pilton has a bit of a st reputation.

Nicest part of town is arguably the New Town around Dundas street, plus close enough to the shops/bars. The buses is good enough that you have a lot of choice - check there's a regular bus if you're not in walking distance of work.

Oh, and get practice hating the trams.

We meet up on the the third Thursday of each month at 8pm for a bit of food, drinks and a chat at the greenmantle pub on the south side of town

There are also regular meets for food at various restaurants around Edinburgh although these are usually at the weekend so may not be of much use to you.

And the north - Granton and Pilton. And the east - Leith.
So as long as you stay away from the north, south, east and west of the city, you'll be fine. Crewe Toll is fine, you might as well stay close to work if it isn't going to be the place where you will live forever.

Sorry, you're right. Apart from the junkies, dealers and prostitutes, it's lovely.

Trust me, these prostitutes are best steered clear of. Literally, steer away.

If you're working at crewe toll, you could easily find a flat down in stockbridge, which would be about a 20 minute walk. Stockbridge has some great little pubs, bars, cafes, restaurants and is still only 20 mins walk from town centre.

As said, the areas to avoid are pretty much all around crewe toll - niddrie, pilton etc.
There are some really nice areas not too far away, but they're predominantly big family houses so there's not much chance of renting a room there. Hence Stockbridge, which has a lot more tenement flats.
