Gents,

I thought I would ask the question, do any of you offshore workers run a business when your on your leave? I was wondering what your thoughts are and would you recommend starting up? and if so what is it you do?

I have been thinking about starting a business and only really work it on my leave, I dont have any ideas set in stone yet. I work offshore as a Mechy and really just looking to do something to keep me busy.

Anyone got any ideas? What I would like to do is provide some sort of service for the Oil and Gas Ind as you can pretty much write your own ticket on what you want for it and they still seem to be paying it.

Supply a service to the oil and gas industry?? That's a very broad and open statement. What were you thinking about providing? Self employed consultancy in your field???

I currently work in the power generation industry, which includes a lot of work offshore, on Gas Turbines. I plan on getting a job offshore next year for the 2 on 3 off aspect as I'm fed up with working here there and everywhere at the drop of a hat!! I've been thinking about the same thing, although my hobby is working on cars. I'd just do the odd service or whatever I decide to take on during my 3 weeks at home. Maybe from home, or if it's financialy viable, rent a little unit somewhere.

For me, it can be easier said than done!! Lol.

I'm that used to being busy (7 x 12hr shifts when away!) that I find it hard to sit on my arse! I need to be busy! It's a curse! Lol.

I get weekends at home, and there isn't time to chill, so if I had a few weeks off, I think I'd spend a week in bed, followed by 2 weeks doing "all those little jobs around the house", then one big project kit car or restoration, or something.

One of my mates thought about becoming a taxi driver for the 3 wks he was home. And I have another who has started his own motorbike wheel shop on the West coast.

You can set up anything your heart desires if you so wish, I had my own lingerie business set up from home and did fittings on my time off.
