I'm getting married in Edinburgh (Lothian Chambers) at the end of February and spending a week here. Any suggestions on what to do and where to go?

We also want to go for a nice meal after the wedding, any suggestions?

What sort of stuff interests you?

Like all cities Edinburgh has just about anything you could want. There is plenty to do in the rest of the country and most of it can be accessed within a short time.

Food, again what do you like? There are numerous good places to eat including several Michelin star places.

We're travelling up by train so everything needs to be walking distance or a short train, bus ride away as we will also have our 2yo with us

We want to visit the castle and the dungeons but without googling the typical visitor attractions I wanted to get local people's opinions on where to go.

For the actual wedding day meal the restaurant must have a variety of food and be good quality with a friendly relaxed atmosphere and able to cater for a decent size party (10 of us will be dining)

The other nights we would like to try an Indian, and then good local pub restaurant food as we'll be mostly dining on our own or in smaller groups.

Not sure when it reopens but I visited the royal yacht in December and was pleasently surprised at how worth the visit it was.
We ate in the dome, it was pretty good.

An obvious one would be to go to the Zoo and see the panda's amongst others. Directly opposite the zoo there is a very good Chinese Restuarant called Cool Jade this is run by the original owner of the Chinese Manor House which was generally reckoned to be the best Chinese in Edinburgh.

IF you are going to teh zoo, book the tickets for viewing the pandas in advance, as they are quite popular beasties.

For Indian try here: Khushi's

Things to do?
A wander around Leith is good now. You can visit the Britannia, plenty bars and cafes and good food places.
Camera Obscura, the zoo, National Portrait Gallery, Museum of Scotland and the History Museum. Several theatres too if that interests you.

Train into Glasgow takes an hour, there you have access to several good art galleries, the Transport Museum, Science Museum and the Clyde.

I can confirm that Khushis is amazing. Just one word of warning it is BYOB for alcohol.

Angels With Bagpipes is possibly the closest nice restaurant to the place you're getting married, The Witchery & The Tower are also close by and are run by the same chap. The local Italian to the building is Vittorios On The Bridge, which is only about 100yards from the Chambers.

The Castle is always worth a visit & the open top bus tours from Waverley Bridge (by the Station) are worth a look just to aid you get your bearings in town.
Mary Kings Close is quite good from an educational point of view, seeing and hearing how the city operated hundreds of years ago, though I'd maybe get someone else on baby sitting duties for the little one.
I'm guessing shopping will be on someones list of recreational activities, Jenners & Harvey Nichols are the main plush Department Stores in the centre of town, though there are a lot of nice little shops (& bars) on George Street.

The Witchery is my favourite restaurant ever, so atmospheric, the Tower's food is equally as good, however it doesn't have the atmosphere (IMHO) that the Witchery does. Not been to Angels with Bagpipes so can't comment on there - but go to the Witchery you so won't regret it!! (there is a website)

When you book for the Witchery remember and ask for a table at the secret garden. This ensures your get the best atmosphere etc. Great place to eat though.

I can also recommend the Witchery. Get the taster dessert, it's phenomenal.

Oh, don't go to the Dungeons, you'll be furious you spent time queueing up and money to get in.

Is that the one we went to at Christmas? Opposite Haymarket?

Glenkinchie distillery just down the road on the way to Haddington? A bit more authentic than the one on the royal mile. You'll need cars though.

South Queensferry nice for a trip out. Good sealife centre at north queensferry. Leith is definitely worth a look, as mentioned above.

Modern art museum is decent. Take a walk along the water of leith through Stockbridge, which is the nicest stretch. Go up Arthurs Seat/ Samsons ribs. Cheesey beach holiday in Portobello with arcades, candy floss, sand, freezing seawater etc. Go to North Berwick and play pitch and putt. Walk over the forth road bridge; if there's a crowd of you, jump up and down simultaneously on a section and feel it move! Go to the planetarium one night. Do a ghosties and ghoulies tour one night in the old town. Have a night out in the cowgate / grassmarket. Pubic triangle? Ghetto tour through some of Trainspottings' holes in the north of Edinburgh - Pilton etc? Skiing on huge dry ski slope at Hillend?

Should keep you busy.

Nope, now at the top of Leith Walk.

I used to love the Drummond Street greasy spoon style incarnation - fish pakora followed by proper second-day-stew style meat bhuna with a gigantic fluffy nan and home made lemon and onion pickles... lick but I was rather disappointed by the Potterrow incarnation and the latest menu has none of the old favourites. frown

Best curry I had lately was in Machynlleth, but the Kebab Mahal in Nicholson Square ain't too shabby. hehe

An American was once overheard saying how good it was that the castle was built so close to the railway station!
