I used to know one, but they were a victim of their own good service - they became far too busy and standards shot down.

I've tried everything from cheap grease-monkeys to Kwik-Fit and main dealers. Not been happy with a single one. They all fail to diagnose simple faults, cause damage, lie to me, etc.

I got so desperate I even put my car in Arnold Shark - took them 2 hours to diagnose a burst clutch cylinder despite me telling them what the problem was! My warranty has (rightly!) only agreed to cover 30 mins diagnosis for that fault so I'm paying the rest. When I go pick up my car, I'll ask them what they did with the rest of the 2 hours after pressing the clutch pedal down and watching as it didn't come back up...

So where can I go?
Is there anywhere that knows how to diagnose faults, won't take years to do it, and won't invent new problems?

We use First Stop garage, it's just off the M74 at junction 2.

I too used to use him until recently when I had a bad experience, I now use Shawlands Motor Company after good reviews from a few folk.

I just got a Chevrolet Lacetti 2 weeks ago - and it has been with the main dealer (Arnold Shark) basically from day 1. I told them it needs a clutch slave cylinder... They took 4 days to diagnose a master cylinder. I got it home last night, and yep it still needs a slave cylinder mad. At least the warranty paid!

My last car (Honda Accord) came back from a service at a local garage with an engine warning light on. They wanted nothing to do with it.

The one before that (Jaguar X Type) got £900 of brake work done (calipers, discs, pads, handbrake cables) - within 4 months the calipers and handbrake cables were seizing again, completely rusted through.

And the one before that (Mondeo 2.0) went to 3 different garages to try and sort an air leak into the engine (revs too high, and if you blocked the air intake hose the engine kept running) - none of them could find the problem.

Those all seem like simple things to me - which gives me very little faith if I need something bigger done!

I've found a decent garage out here in Helensburgh, but it's probably too far for you to come? I also use the Alfa specialist in East Kilbride to look after the trickier stuff, but he has his hands full looking after fiat coupes and alfa 156s / gtvs to consider going after other business!

not sure what area you are in.

I use Jim McAuley in wishaw to do my work up here on my pile of old cars. Knows his stuff, used by a lot of guys in the trade. He specialises in Porkers and VW but works on anything. As always is v busy but knows his stuff very reasonable price wise and as everyone can make mistakes, if he has he owns up and sorts it

Can mention i passed on his name
He does work for quite a few guys on here
