It is recommended on Jeep forums that changing the trans fluid in the Grand Cherokee should be done every 30k or so miles. I think the fluid in mine may have been in for 40k. However, at £250 for the main dealer to do it, it doesn't make sense compared to the value of the truck.

Any recommendations for a local Glasgow based Indy who knows Jeeps? I understand it is imperative to use ATF+4 fluid.

Cheers

Can you not just do it yourself, or get a mate to help.

You wont need much in the way of tools, other than the suitable socket/spanner to remove the drain plug.

You shouldn't even need a jack, just lie underneath on a sheet of cardboard or similar.

Get the ATF from a lcal motor factors.

I suggest you give these guys a call.

I can recommend them. (although they do get quite stroppy if you can't pick your car up within an hour or two of the job being done).

I can also recommend Mackie in relation to anything auto box related - that said, I doubt they'll be cheap.

I'd imagine roughly half of what the dealer is quoting. (unless the Jeeps' box is particularly complex?)

I considered that, and I would have if it was a casxe of removing the drain plug and refilling. It appears to be quite a complex job with housings being removed to replace filters, fluid flush through, etc.

I'll call Mackies as recommended and see what they say. It surely has to be cheaper than £270 from Jeep!

I had an XJ auto and did the oil myself, I never bothered doing anything to the filter, as you say it's a bit involved. My understanding was that it was a bit of mesh/gauze that you could clean out if required.

I just changed the oil and it was clean enough, though well used. I'd be surprised if it had been changed more than once before.

Did the dealer quote include cleaning/replacing the filter?

It is absolutely imperative that the filter is changed. It is a micronic filter that cannot be cleaned; i.e. the pores in it work at microscopic level resulting in them eventually closing completely causing cavitation in the transmission and eventual failure.

You MUST replace the filter. £270.00 is a fair price if the job is done properly. It's much more involved than an engine oil and filter change.
