I am currently trying to find a builder to do some renovation/refurbishement work on a traditional granite house in aberdeen, a new extension, some structural work etc.
Plannings approved and the warrant is in progress, structural detaisl and calcs all done and sized etc.

anyone done similar recently and had any good, or bad experiences?

cheers smile

Lowell,

This isn't good I'm afraid ...

I'm currently trying to find a crew from farther afield (possibly even Eastern Europe) and prepared to build their accomodation in to the bottom line.

The bids NE building contractors are submitting just don't stack up.

If any Scottish builders are reading this and fancy a £200k (ish) contract in Aberdeenshire ... please do get in touch.

The local companies who've submitted tenders can go whistle.

Cheers,

Eric smile

Hi Lowell,

Try Bob Lewis - burlybobthebuilder@hotmail.com

Do you still have your 205 autocrosser or did Mr Cowie include it in his packing up sale?
cheers

As for the pug I honestly dont know, he bvggered off to the good old US of A, last thing he said it was staying somewhere though.

Do you still hold events up there?

Do you still do stuff with 205's as i think you did a clutch on mine many years ago, and do adam and fiona rent a barn off you?

small world if so smile

I'm in the same boat, I'm away to start tendering for an extension near Peterhead circa 350m2 but only have the name of 1 person whom to go with. I sort of know Burlybob from when I used to be in the TVR club does he work on extensions of this size? If anyone else can suggest any good builders who they have had good experience of and are happy with the quality of work then please list them here.

Apologies for the thread hijack.

Another thought just occured maybe we can all club together and put it out as one giant tender, should get some good discounts then.

It's ridiculous I know but once the architect tempts you with the drawings and the space its hard to say no.

Whatever you do DON'T use an architect that 'sounds like' PINTO or a builder that 'sounds like' BOWATT.

Try not to use an aberdeen firm as they day rates are higher than London. If you are able to provide accomodation or cheap hotel near by then ask firms from further afield.

Indeed, unless you want them to work in cahoots to push up the bill by hundreds of thousands.

This kinda annoys me that your taring all us in construction in the Aberdeen area with the same brush.

The local industry is quite weak at the moment and you can get some descent and competitive pricing from local firms.
Local builders will also be clued up on building regulations and there won't be any expensive mistakes made.

Whilst there are always good and bad firms everywhere there is a labour rate differential across the country. It is further exagerated in Aberdeen thanks to the oil industry.
I am not slagging off all aberdonian firms, I am simply pointing out that with a £200k+ job the labour rate elsewhere could provide large potential savings.

I totally agree, avoid any firms from Aberdeen if you can. Be better for your finances!

This is why I posted this a while ago.

I have absolutely no idea where to start when it comes to finding a firm based outside my area.

BTW - some images of my project here.

Am hearing joiners in Aberdeen looking for £35/£40 an hour?

A by-product of a bouyant oil industry is suppose..

The joiners we used last year were on £40+ an hour. Far more expensive in Aberdeenshire than London - or anywhere else for that matter.
