I was thinking of going 'green' by buying a normal(ish) car. My passat W8 does about 23mpg average for overall mileage. That is checking the trip computer after 2-3000miles and checking the average for that mileage. About 27mpg on a long run at say 70ish driving up and down to London. English Petrol gives about 2-3mpg more , hence posting on Scottish forum.

I went out driving and testing other allegedley economical cars! however when checking their trip computers for say 700 miles the best i saw was in a Honda hybrid CRV at 46mpg. Some diesels which allegedly do 50+ were doing mid 30's. Tried my daughers 207 1.4 petrol and only does 38mpg average. The others old 106 was doing about 39.

I know anyone can take a car out and get a quick high average. so PLEASE DO NOT POST SAYING MY XXXX GETS 60 on a long run.

What I am interested in, is anyone who can post honestly saying that over say 750 miles of NORMAL driving ie not all motorway cruise, as in short comutes, general town driving etc, that their car actually averages over 50mpg. As most modern cars are fitted with some basic trip computer going up to 99 hours driving then it is easy to check.

I saw that What Car published something recently on the subject and that they only found a couple of cars could exceed 50mpg.

Looking for some intersting HONEST posts! Be prepared for fellow PH'rs checking your car though!

Mini Cooper D does it pretty easily. 60% town driving, rest on NSL country roads or dual carriageway type roads. Without trying to drive economically it manages 55mpg.

I should add, I know this to be true as my mother has one, albeit a Clubman. And this is in and around Aberdeen.

My dad always gets high 50's in his Xsara Picasso 1.6hdi.

His particular style of driving irritates me, always seems to be in a higher gear than I would choose but the proof is in the pudding as they say!

This is an interest close to my heart - my diesel Altea gets 42mpg average (over 65000 miles). However its claimed economy is in the early 50s.

Thinking of chopping it in for a petrol - I only do 12k a year and modern FAP diesels scare me a bit not to mention the fact that I know a few folk with petrol cars and they are getting high 30s so not a huge difference to mine but the petrol is 6p a litre cheaper!

In the 48728 miles that I did in the Grande Punto it averaged 51.4mpg.
The Focus is raping my wallet at 35.7 over the 6718 miles so far covered. (When you have time on your hands Excel is like porn, just look at FamilyDub laugh)

Just before he retired, my Dad had a Golf Tdi. I think it was a 130bhp model?

He was getting 60mpg avg. Mostly M9 to work but some other mixed driving too.

My diesel Zafira can easily top 50 mpg om Motorway without trying too hard and depending on the type of local running you do low 40's I'd expect better in an Astra/insignia if that were your cup of tea A BMW 318d i had on hire going to Kirkiston last year got thrashed on way to circuit in time for prectice and still got high 40's It's down to driving style but 40+ mpg on a tank can be done

My Fabia averages mid 50 mpg on most journeys. That's in town traffic as well as motorway driving.

My wife's Clio DCi averages 65mpg commuting in SE London and Kent, on the rare occasions we use it on motorway trips it drops to just below 60mpg if you go much above 70mph.

Last year we had a hire golf 1.2 turbo. Brand new car and drove back from London with it. sitting at 60-70 it was doing 50+ easily. When it was trying to cruise at 80+ the consumption dropped alarmingly. I appreciate there are compromises with small engines, but seems some cars are tuned to run at 70ish and when they stray beyond that they fall off a cliff in economy terms. That is in addition to the performance issues.
Fiat have been trumpeting the new 2 cylinder engine. Speaking to a few who have used them, they are great and CAN give great economy if one tries. But driven normally they struggle to better 40mpg.

Kay, how does a car driven by you go economically? lol
Just asking. don't want hit!

my father is averageing 42 around edinburgh in his Fiat Doblo and it has the aerodynamic qualities of a brick - I would think its possible to get 50 out of it if the journeys were longer

my wife's Fiat Punto 1.2 manages to do 39 in her daily commute I once made every effort to average 50mpg in it on trip to Glasvegas, and did manage 51.6 it said, but f**k-that, Id rather pay the extra and not have to concentrate so much or drive so slowly.

my 1997 A6 2.5tdi averages 39 to and from work, and did 47 in a recent trip from Edinburgh to Duxford, then on to Chichester and then home, all at normal speeds, with no effort to be economical.

the BMW 1.8 and 2.0 tractors seems extreemly good - better than the Audis going by the ones at work.

as has been proven, its not necesarily what you drive, but how you drive it.

Have a couple of Bora's with the 1.9 pd engine in them which, with a lot of urban thrown in, return high 40's at best.

It does take a dual carriageway or motorway run to see above 50mpg but with the six speed box they'll do 53 mpg at 80mph for hours.

MK1 Skoda diesels mostly all return high figures. As does the Insignia 2'0L diesel . Been running a little Fabia TDI around for a few months and the TC says something like 55mpg( fuel priced at circa £1.4 /litre, gives me 80+ miles on £10 ). Hired an Insignia for a long trip a year or two back and it made the Fabia look greedy. As said Mondeo TDCI are not too bad either, plenty of toys, but the ones I've hired seem to be lacking in the get up & go department .

As I said "MK1 Skoda diesels " .I mentioned the Fabia 1.4TDI- I've heard from Octavia 1.9 DI ( not sure if S or T) that they get even better figures . From my tank. £10 at £1.4 /litre = 7.14 litres.
80 miles on 7.14L = 1.5666 gal . 80 miles on that = somewhat over 51 MPG. (and price was possibly nearer £1.47/litre) .

My A6 1.9 (130) is getting around 40 mph on a mixture of 70% town driving and 30% motorways and I am trying my hardest to get it to that figure, going over to Belgium on Friday and will take it easy(4 up) and see what it can achieve, a friend is also coming along in his 2012 Skoda Superb so it will be a good test.
