Hi just a quick question and hoping some fellow phers can help me out. To cut a long story short I've been very busy with work and missed the girlfriends birthday seen as I currently reside 240 miles away and work was on an outage. Typical bloke I've promised to make it up to her and said we'd go somewhere nice. (My vast knowledge of Edinburgh dining extends to pizza express etc) So really anywhere that serves nice food, has a good atmosphere and the price doesn't match the cost of a happy meal, any suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks Jake

The witchery or wedgewood are the 2 I would suggest.
Wedgewood was the best meal I have ever had.

Another vote for The Witchery, and Tom Kitchin's place is excellent too.

Witchery again. Lovely meal and a real nice feel to the place.

Edinburgh has five Mchelin star restaurants. They are listed below. All are fabulous and not cheap. Much better value for lunch.

21212 is a kind of Heston Blumenthal type place, pushing the boundaries of cooking. You can have a look at the dish put in front of you and not have a clue what you're eating. Beautiful new town building.

Number One is classic Scottish fare. Very opulent surroundings. They don't do lunch. Could be a little stuffy.

The Kitchen/Royal Terrace are Scottish with a French twist. Both very modern surroundings.

Martin Wishart is fundamentally French cooking in a modern restaurant.

21212 - 3 Royal Terrace, Edinburgh EH7 5AB T: 0131 523 1030

Number One - The Balmoral, 1 Princes Street, Edinburgh EH2 2EQ T: 0131 557 6727

Restaurant Martin Wishart - 54 The Shore, Leith, Edinburgh EH6 6RA T: 0131 553 3557

The Kitchin 78 Commercial Quay, Leith, Edinburgh EH6 6LX T: 0131 555 1755

Castle Terrace 33/35 Castle Terrace, Edinburgh EH1 2EL T: 0131 229 1222

Looks like you've got plenty of suggestions above, but I'll also suggest Centotre on George st. Great food, wine, service and atmosphere.

P.s. is the Witchery as spooky as it sounds?

If the Wishart restaurant in Leith is a 5 star, the Witchery is a 3. Oh, and 121212 or whatever would be a 4, but it's fun, esp if you get the seat near the open kitchen.

Number One at the Balmoral. Fantastic. Had a really good meal there earlier in the year.

1) Yes, very.
2) As someone who doesn't really like fish(I blame growing up in a fish 'n chip shop wink ) it is no problem picking non-fish dishes.

Lots of good suggestions. My favourite posh at the moment is The Honours which is Wishart's "cheaper" establishment. Love Ondine too, but it's all about the seafood. Don't leave it till the last second to book or you'll be back at pizza express!

If you like steaks, Kyloe at The Rutland is pretty good.

Andrew Fairlie at Gleneagles is Scotland's only 2-Michelin-starred restaurant and has just been voted Britain's Best Restaurant in the Sunday Times poll of 100 top eateries.

It's less than an hour from Edinburgh.

Don't get me wrong I enjoyed eating here, however, if you do go, make sure you eat before you actually go here.

I left here still hungry and grabbed a big mac after the meal!
