Yep, found a nice hill, some ice and away i went.
Shame the sledge was actually the Disco.. and i didn't want to go sledging. hehe

Still, no real damage, sidestep needs some adjustment with the Chapelhall multitool (hammer) and the black door trim needs new clips to get put back on, and some glue to reattach the silver sidestep piece.
Had to drive further into the ditch and continue down it, then had to straddle the ditch for a bit, then eventually found a part of the track where i could drive back onto.

Picture at the top of the hill.

And when the sledge parked up..

Picture doesn't show how far over it was, the only time i've ever been so scared was when an ex was "late" by a few days...

My new proper tyre's cant arrive soon enough.

Whoops!

Fitted my Freelander 2 with some nice Cooper Zeon LTZ tyres - remarkably quiet at road speeds and more than capable for the winter ahead - let it snow!!

Also coming with 16mm of tread from new should get 50k miles out of them - bargain!

Alfie was housing the folks today, currently making my feet warm by sleeping on them.

Oh I know Paul, only mine drive out wink wasn't the only car to come a cropper, quite a few defenders came unstuck as well. Some needing winches to get out.

Goodyear duratracs are on order, just need to wait for them to arrive.

I've fallen off the road before. But snow wasn't involved, just stupidity.

Everyone was sledging in Glasgow West End this morning........left at 4am to head for a flight and nearly couldn't get out of the street - great start to the bleary eyed morning!!

Last year was my first winter with RWD but it was a pussycat of a winter - already dubious about this winters travels!

Any of you 4wd lot want to swap haha

A tow would have been easier but the track was so bad that the group I was in decided it was unsafe to bring one if the defenders down incase it also went sledging. We also couldn't reverse one back up the track either for same reasons.

So it had to come out under its own power. Which it did. smile

Timely reminder that all the aids in the world can't overcome the point when grip vanishes and you start to slide.

I have almost the same car as you (E92) and I have no problems....

....I'm on winter tyres biggrin
The wheels cost £100 for 4 on e-bay - genuine BMW 16" jobbies. Bit of wet'n'dry, some hammerite paint (yes, hammerite), and the tyres were quite cheap too, being 16" fitment. This is the second winter from the same set and I should be able to get a 3rd winter out of them as well.

By going onto winters, it actually saves me money as I'm spending less time on the expensive 19" rubber, and losing that feeling of dread that you normally get in a BMW when there's snow is almost priceless.

Winter tyres.......................contentious issue for me......

It's a company car.

I was about to buy a set of winter alloys/tyres.

Let the company know as a courtesy what my intentions were and that I was buying them myself not looking for a contribution.

They check it out.

Come back to me and confirm that I'm not allowed to change them - no real reason.

Same department send out a 3 page PDF on the issues about driving in winter and the normal 'state the bleeding obvious' points.

Unless I print that PDF out a few hundred times and lay it out everywhere I drive I'd rather have the f####### winter tyres thanks - wouldn't mind taking one of the quads from the folks farm back up the road if this continues.......he says in jest......

I drove back to Aberdeen on the A96 quite late last night, and the E46 turned into a bit of a sledge just past Huntley! Bloody terrifying, the black ice just appeared out of nowhere. Thankfully I managed to hold it on the road (and more importantly in my lane), but it was a slow trip back from there.

Glad the Discovery is alright!

Daylight inspection shows a fecked mudflap and some mud but no damage, bodywork escaped unmarked, somehow.
Very lucky escape looking back at the video and seeing where it landed and how far I had to drive to get back on the road.

This was an off road day as well, several other landys went ditch finding to some degree and that isn't the worst one of the day.
The track is rather natorious going by people's experiences of it on past runs.

I would stick winter tyres on it anyway, much rather be in control of the car. A BMW won't likely drive back out.

We started at Lochearnhead, the trail started along the old railway line before heading up a farmers track into the hills.
Good fun but I won't be attempting it again in a hurry!

Off roading and icy conditions are not fun partners.

I enjoyed my trips over the weekend in SWMBO's 116..

Ok, trips were always slow and mostly sideways, but what great fun.

Must get another RWD car before next winter!
