Anyone knows someone in the Fife/Edinburgh area who knows about welding aluminium fuel tanks? I have a tank that's the correct size/shape but I need some bosses and pipework on it changed around as I'm moving from carburetor to fuel injection with swirl pots and the like. It's had fuel in it so I'm not daft enough to think you can just weld it as-is and not blow-up, but I would like to know if it's possible to purge the tank in some way to make it safe to weld (I've heard options are to fill with water or keep a flow CO2 going through it). Anyone out there that can actually do it [safely] and can talk to me about the it and discuss costs?

Plan B is a whole new tank being made with fittings in the right place but I've no idea of the cost...not cheap though I'd hazard a guess.

Plan C is to use bolt-in fittings and cap off the existing ones, but there's too many stories of the captive part of the fitting coming loose and there's no way to tighen it again.

Anyone who can TIG weld to a decent standard could do it.

As to flushing it just fill it with water a few times and it will be safe

I've also heard of using exhaust gas to flush the tank. Water sounds better to me.
