I'm changing the engine in a car Eric and replacing the binnacle/clocks with a set from a car with the appropriate tacho. A second hand set of clocks obviously has the wrong mileage.

To be honest, I assumed it was stored on the ecu rather than in the clock itself
Cheers,
Iain

Some people will tell you to just keep all the paperwork on new and old clocks so the later buyer of your car can trace the history and calculate the correct mileage from the new unmolested clocks. They'll then also be able to work out the mileage of the chassis, and the mileage of the engine, because whilst a correction leads to the right chassis mileage, then engine mileage will then be incorrect (arguably more important?). If you leave the new clocks as they are then they'll correctly reflect the engine mileage, and you won't have to spend more money on a correction service.

Quite, there's a big sheaf of service history and mto's to prove chassis mileage.

So since chassis mileage is easy to back up, why not leave the clocks showing engine mileage?

Because the important part and legal part is to have the clock showing the chassis mileage, you can't put a 50,000 mile car back to 0 because its had a new engine put in or rebuilt. The mileage is a figure used by most to get an idea of the overall condition of a car and affects value, I certainly wouldn't be buying a car that had clocks changed unless it was to show the true overall mileage of a car.

Also, try explaining your mileage to the Dvla, the MOT tester looking at your clocks or your insurance company... It would be a mess of paperwork and questioning every time.

To me it looks as though the OP wants to keep the chassis mileage correct, if he wanted to "clock" the car he would leave the mileage on the replacement clocks as it was surely?

I can't see the harm in what the OP wants to do as i see it.
