GoPro - Not so pro!
Discussion
I wanted to test my GoPro Hero 3 Silver Edition (If you remember I was asking if anyone was selling, well I bought one new). Took my time researching everything and getting it setup I then went out for a quick journey to Portlethen and back then realised I hadn't swapped the back door on the enclosure so I have a muffled video.
Sh*t
I'll ensure I don't do this on the run this weekend.

The 3 can take an external mic, i've got the original HD hero, which can't take an external mic
but to be honest whenever i've used the waterproof enclosure and the suction mount to have the camera on the outside of the car, anything above 40mph was just really bad wind noise,
so i'm experimenting with a separate audio recorder that i can mount somewhere wind noise free (outside on the boot low down near the exhaust, in the engine bay, in the boot, etc) so i can mount the camera anywhere and then sync the audio and video afterwards on the computer, which isn't as much hassle as it sounds, haha!

Did you use the adhesive mounts onto the dash?
I got a Gopro 3 black recently for my birthday and I'm still finding my way a liitle with it. I still need to buy a roll bar mount for the Toniq and i was hoping to run an external mic behind the seats without creating too much wind noise.

Perhaps I'm mistaken, but the quality of the footage is no better than that taken by a recent smart phone?
Doesn't appear to be any better than my 7 year old, £75 Casio point and shooter.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GuC77YF3IXQ

i think people are mistaking the attributes of the gopro.
it is designed for useability, simplicity and taking a beating (rough, outdoor conditions). in order to do this the quality and sound take a hit.
yes there are much better quality cameras out there, not many in the same price bracket, hence it being market leader. If you are looking for something more proffesional or better quality then you are going to have to pay for it.
but if you are just needing it because you don't fancy strapping your phone to the outside of your car then it is still perfectly watcheable and easy to transfer/edit.
the sound is it's biggest failing though. i also made the mistake of buying the first Hero HD. but instead of binning it and geting the next one i think i will buy a slightly better quality camera for more artistic shots and more serious stuff. I'll also buy an external mic that i'll use to experiment with placement on the car for optimum sound
there is a topic on this in the TVR section, i'd suggest a pistonhead search to see what has been covered already

Been looking these, although not sure if I can justify spending £150+ on one if the audio is a bit kak without adding a microphone (more $$$).
Wondering about getting one of the ones suggested on this thread, then getting an external mic.

To be honest I have yet to use my alternative back door so I wouldn't take too much from my current videos audio track simply because the unit was in a water proof housing. I researched GoPro a lot before buying and to be fair the camera is really good, the quality is excellent and the features are quite good too. I run it via the app on my iPhone which allows a preview and remote control etc. With the run coming up this weekend perhaps I will upload a full 1080p video

I still prefer my bullet camera
