I asked the dealer to swap my private plate from my old car in to our new car ...seems to be taking a while for our new documents to come through .

Anyone know what the potential fine would be for fitting the plates early ?

" I was under the impression the dealer had sorted everything , officer "

I'm sure folk used to do this a lot with minimal fuss ?

It is usually done in less than 28 days but can take upto 60 if I remember correctly. I can't see why you wouldn't just wait. If the police stopped you they might chuck a "fraudulent display of number plates" or similar at you. I suppose it would be the same as cloning a vehicle.

Are you serious?

Best posting this in Plod section but either way WTF! If you did not have your tax disc why the would you put the plate on. This process can take a few weeks to sort out.

You don't need to wait for the V5 - normal practice to be without one when swapping plates or buying/selling.
But you need a valid tax disc with the disc matching the plate.

I just put one of my plates on retention and got the V5 tax disc and replacement MOT in 5 days - quite impressed by the DVLA service.

Retention always seems a quicker service. Not that I would know as I never swap my cars or plates rofl

8 days from handing dealer retention cert to getting new tax disc in post. They can be pretty swift!

I recently bought a second hand car which had a personal plate but I wanted to fit a number I had on retention. I took the documents I had, (green slip from V5C, MOT Cert, insurance docs and retention cert) to my local DVLA office and within 10 minutes I had a new Tax Disc, MOT cert and number plate authorisation.

Aren't the dvla shutting all the local offices making posting the papers away the only choice?

Yep they have just shut down the one in Inverness. The registration process will end up longer soon I'd imagine.
