Inverness - Greenlaning?
Discussion
Sorry to disappoint you but there are no such things as Greenlanes in Scotland. In fact there are virtually no designated rights of way for vehicles other than the highways, which is quite ironic because if you are travelling by foot, bike or horse you can go almost anywhere as a result of the land reform act.
If you want to go off road, and there are thousands of miles of fantastic off road trails, then you will need the landowners permission. In the Highlands this usually means asking the local estate owner. Most of the 4x4 clubs are able to access off road trails through agreements with the local land owners but this can be more difficult if you are asking as an individual.
If you are only going to be in Inverness for a short time then you might want to consider the local pay and play site which is normally quiet during the week and covers quite a large and scenic area.

or contact the local 4x4 club and see if they have any events that coincide with your visit.

If you don't feel the need to actually be 'off road' there are quite a few minor public roads in the Inverness area that are fairly extreme by normal standards which are worth checking out. I can give you a few examples if you are interested.

Thanks very much for the helpful post, Bigblock.
I'll take you up on the offer, so please do point out where the rough roads are
The trip is actually a surprise for my mum. She turns 60 on the 10th of April and she's never been to Scotland and wants to see where the Battle of Culloden took place.
My folks arrive from NZ at he start of April and we head up to Inverness n the 6th - I can't wait!
Thanks again,
C.

As i've found out, getting to use a 4x4 properly off road is limited to either pay and play sites, owner's club day outs ( i've used the Scottish landrover owners club a few times) or dedicated green lane sites.
I use one site and was on a run on Sunday with them, they go on private land at the land owner's permission.
Cost's £10 for the day which is fair as the cash goes to the land owner to keep them on side, we obey all the rules given to use, where to go/not to go and shut gates behind us.
You could be lucky and find something but it's unlikely sadly.

I would be interested to know where you would find a 'dedicated green lane site' in Scotland.

The dangers of typing while not fully paying attention.
