I believe I should be voted the Dictator of this country and be free of the UK;

Manifesto:

Abolish all speed limits out of towns
Burn all Camera vans and return the tax they levied on motorists
Double the number of Traffic cops and MARKED cars
Scrap all unmarked traffic cars
Reduce duty on fuel and diesel by 50% and 60% in rural areas
Spend all VED on road repair and by passes
Make compulsory display of car insurance with VED
Make accelerating when being overtaken/driving in middle/ outside lanes when not compulsory bans
Make everyone resit their test every 5 years

If Any politician up here wants to adopt these as part of independence vote, then I am for it.
Otherwise............

Seen a video been brandished about Faceboke that is claimed the "no camp" tried to ban, it's full of some interesting facts but i would like to see similar from the "No Camp" before really mkaing up my mind.

it is the single most important decision we as a Country and Individuals will ever make. It will affect my childrens life more than mine I imagine so i'm not tkaing it lightly!

One fact that i found interesting is that if we go independant we would have £1.5Billion more spend on Defence in Scotand as we contribute £3.5 Billion now and only see £2 Billion come back our way!

Scottish and proud. Wife and best friends are English however.

I think only a simpleton would vote in favour of independence. In my opinion giving the vote to 16 year olds was a stroke of genius on Salmond's part. Only lackwits and teenagers with zero real world experience or the scope to consider currency, NATO, EU, UN membership etc would vote in favour of starting again on our own.

If they'd done that in the early 70s we could have done alright if we'd been canny with oil money. The Norwegians learned from watching us how not to waste it all. And that's before we get into the nitty gritty of the military etc, and exactly which countries the Americans are happy to share crucial technology with. IRRC an Independant Scotland is not on that list, so whilst they aren't having much to say on the matter now, we should not assume the Americans would be happy to recognise us as "formerly a part of the UK". They explicity won't allow certain bits of technology to be in French possession, for example.

The devil is in the detail with this. We have gone from the colonial age to the present day as a union, and all of the aspects which differentiate us as a society then and now are ingrained - irrespective of what anyone in Scotland or England says.

I really don't see what we would gain with an independent Scotland. I think I'd be looking at emigrating if it does happen as I have a pretty good standard of life and would like to continue with it.

If the vote was tomorrow, the answer is 100% no, too many unknowns. Defence, oil, currency etc. Not saying i wont change my mind between now and next September though, however Alex S. and co are going to have to work hard between now and then.

This, only maybe not Canada. The would is open to go to.
Would not be staying here though. Plus people i know are voting NO to is as well.

I would want to see the figures, proper income, expenditure, budgets etc. Not some, "it will be fine so don't worry" type excuse.

I don't want Independence but fear we might get it.

For years I followed in my dad's footsteps and voted SNP. In Lanarkshire, it was more a protest vote as Labour always got in anyway but just wanted to keep them on their toes.

But then Labour and the various other parties chose to self detonate, have idiots as leaders and the day after the last Scottish elections, they all resigned (was it the labour one who tried hiding in a sandwich shop?)

So the SNP voters will vote yes. The Braveheart type fols will vote yes.
The problem as I see it, is whether all the No voters will actually go along to the polling station? And to get the interest of the No Voters, the other parties really need to get their act in gear. However if this is driven by Cameron & Milliband, it will just play into Salmonds hands.

Having lived through Thatcher, then Labour, and now a party, for all intents and purposes Tories in another name. Time in my opinion to take a big chance on the unknown, so it will be a yes from me.

Wikipedia lists 53 countries and territories that were formerly ruled or administered by the United Kingdom or part of the British Empire and chose independence:

Are there any of these that have not prospered as independent countries?

No.

No good arguments for it - "National Identity" or whatever Salmond is flapping his jowls about? That sounds lovely, I'm sure "National Identity" will keep me warm in the winter rolleyes

I expect that this vote will be very heavilly no, as the majority of PH posters are a bit more intelligent than your average Joe (or Jock smile) - what genuinley scares me is that the great unwashed will be persuaded to vote yes because they see a piture of Salmond holding a Scotland shirt and shouting "Freedom!"

Just adding to the debate. Can you answer the question?

Personally, I am very proud to be Scottish, happy to be British, but don't like what the politicians have turned 'Europe' into - a permanent and unaffordable drain on countries' resources to shore up a political system that is unnecessary. Let's go back to what the European Community was supposed to be about - a trading zone - before the politicians messed it up. That would be good, but wouldn't provide the politicians with their comforts.

I doubt if enough Scottish people will vote for independence; I suspect even some of those who support it will bottle it at the voting station. Besides, as is evident here and in any other debate, the Scottish people will do what they've always done over the centuries - fight each other. Divide and conquer.
