Small Boat maintenance
Discussion
Any one got a boat?
Self employed lived in Kent/the South East all my life and I've had enough... I love Scotland, the history, the music, the food, the weather and the people. I want to move, preferably North of Inverness.
I run a small business (sole trader) doing hull cleaning, anti-fouling, painting and varnishing. Is there much call for this work around the lochs/coast or am I going to have to chop it all in and get a proper job?

Check out the west coast marinas, especially the Clyde coast, places like Helensburgh have large marinas. The east coast has significantly fewer. I would suggest that you make this a relatively long term plan and take several holidays in selected west coast areas and sus out the work potential.

One of my mates is the yard manager in one of the best marinas on the west coast. Drop me a line and I'll have a word with him if you want. I think you could survive quite well in the summer: winter would be quieter.Self employed lived in Kent/the South East all my life and I've had enough... Welcome to Scotland by the way; you made the right choice.

One thing i would be wary of is midgies. Self employed lived in Kent/the South East all my life and I've had enough... I love Scotland, the history, the music, the food, the weather and the people. I want to move, preferably North of Inverness.

Unfortunately I haven't moved just yet, still got a couple of jobs to do, including a very nice 80foot Sunseeker I haven't started on yet because he's still messing around in the Med. He didn't even blink when I told him £40ph labour + materials [usually I negotiate depending on the job and end up charging less, but he just agreed] so I'll wait for him to get back

Winter is usually dealing with the paperwork and accounting plus any small jobs (trailer sailers, small speed boats on peoples drives etc) but that depends on the weather.
I have holidayed in Scotland and met the midges... still can't wait to get back up there.
