Oil/Gas employment

After a bit of advice. Anyone on here gone into the oil/gas industry, completely changing career path?

Did you find it easy to transfer skills and get your CV recognised? I've been doing a bit of research and reckon an onshore role in emergency response or HSE might suit my skill set.

Any info greatly appreciated.

Cronyism and nepotism is the accepted path!

Having said that i was picked-up via a graduate milk-round in the nineties.

It really does help if you know someone who knows someone though.

Problem is with the oil industry, the blow off about ageing staff and skills shortage.

However you are in one position and you go for another, they say....you not the this bit of paper....

So you go and get said piece of paper....push for the job again and they say...sorry no experience

Then the wonder why they have skills shortage

A boy I used to to work with was a jnr engineer, and had a degree in music. Yes work that out. Had to teach him the principles of the equipment he was working with.

That sounds about right, but his uncle or father was probably in the same company

Vey hard to get in now, I have stopped saying what I do for a living (rov) now as I just get plagued if the cats out the bag, and its not the huge money everyone says it is.

Unfortunately there is a lot of truth in this statement, certainly in the past, which is why we are in a global skills shortage now. There is a bottle neck of people trying to get in at the bottom level but there is a shortage of experienced skilled people in the supervisory roles, which dilutes the combined pool of knowledge available to pass onto the junior staff. I have seen people promoted to high positions so quickly that it is genuinely scary, all because there is no-one else available........

I'm doing my NEBOSH certificate at the moment, hopefully finish that in April so I can start applying.

I know a couple of people that are working up there and they are putting my name about. I've also spoken to a couple of recruitment agencies who seem quite confident my transferable skills will be an attraction to employers up there.

I don't know about offshore jobs, I know companies are wary of inexperienced guys hurting themselves. I'm looking at onshore jobs.

Don't suppose we have anyone that's went into the onshore side of the oil/gas industry recently, preferably the H&S side?
