Evening,

I’m after some help. I’m travelling up from Bristol for Hogmanay this year. Staying in Glasgow (family) but want to come over to Edinburgh for the torch parade on the 30th. Can anyone recommend a good parking spot which we’re likely to be able to get in to or a park & ride? The Edinburgh council website is pretty unhelpful. Or is it going to be far less painful to get a train...(haven't looked at prices)

We have a coach sorted for NYE so can fully enjoy the festivities.

Park & Ride - try the airport. Frequent buses from there.
Otherwise, consider Citylink - £10.40 return Glasgow to Edinburgh, no peak restrictions & tickets are valid for a month. Travelling during either of the morning or (long!) afternoon peak with Scotrail will see you skinned for about £22 each, about £12.50 day return off peak though & they do discounts if there's 3 or more of you.

Driving and trying to get parked in Edinburgh is a utter faff.


Train from Glasgow queen street return is £12.60 off peak and 21.80 peak. Most trains will have you in Edinbrugh in less than an hour.

Son used park and ride from Ingliston/airport recently for rugby but be careful how late you come out of Edinburgh as I don't think it opens much after midnight

There are two Park and Rides on the west of Edinburgh, the airport/Ingleston one and one on the A71 at Hermiston. There should be a full bus service as far as I know on the 30th so there should be no issues getting back to them unless you are very late. Check bus time-tables on the Lothian buses website, they also have a good app for your phone to check when the next bus is due.

Train would be another good option as Waverly station is in the centre of Edinburgh and will be easy to get to the torchlight procession from. It'll probably be more expensive but if you are near a station at the other end then might be more cost neutral with the saving of petrol driving through and then bus fares.
Probably worth mentioning that there are two stations in Glasgow, both run a service to Edinburgh. The train from central station takes longer and stops more but maybe it will go through a station near where you are staying if it's not city centre.

Thanks for the replies. I think I'm going to try for the park & ride out on the A71. I'll save the buses & alcohol for NYE.
