The website is pretty rubbish but if you call them most of the people seem to be really helpful.

I'd be putting the new plates on the car now, because that's now the legal number, the tax disc will follow but any ANPR check will show it as been taxed on the new number anyway.

If you have the V5 back you put the plates on, same as having a number plate authorisation letter

You should have had the replacement tax disc and the covering paperwork back before the new V5. That seems well out of the normal order of things.

Things have changed a bit now Swansea are dealing with the paperwork, it can come back in any order.

As soon as the transfer is processed, as long as the plate shows as being registered to the car via the road tax inquiry site (https://www.taxdisc.direct.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/app/enquiry?execution=e1s1) you can legally drive the car with the new plates on the car regardless of if the new road tax has arrived or not.

Changed days indeed - I assumed that the actual paperwork transfer triggered a new V5, so it would be after the disc. I sent away a retention yesterday so I await development with interest. The last transfer I did was three months ago so that was still the local office.

My v5 came back within the week, the rest came a week later.
