Where is this starting from this year? Been before when they started from Blythswood square but conflicting information online says it's starting from Riverside museum and Paisley, all a bit confusing.

more than last year tongue out plus there is a substantial heritage run, the classic fraternity in scotland are coming up trumps again to give the public a good spectacle. think the start at paisley will be good under the floodlights. looking forward to it

That's got to be a joke, 9 cars?
Where does it say that?

My dad was going to come through from East Lothian to go along with me after I told him how good it was the year they left Blythswood square. This might not be such a good idea.

Unfortunately thats the official entry number. There are local car clubs coming along to make up numbers, but will only be 9 "competitors".

The council and police screwed it after the big one in Glasgow Green. The council tried to charge £5K+ to suspend parking meters and the police complained about competitors driving quick. So its now a non-timed stage (meaning it has no relevance to the rally) so few competitors want to put the mileage on their cars for no real reason.

How sad. I've nothing against Paisley, but the move to Paisley shows a complete lack of understanding of the nostalgia that lies behind the event. The Blythswood Square start in the city centre was atmospheric because of the historical associations (it was a start point for the rally in the 50s and 60s). I seem to recall that there were even cars flown in from Japan and elsewhere at the Blythswood Square start a few years ago. Were I in the fortunate position to be able to do such things, I certainly wouldn't be flying in my historic vehicle from abroad for a start in Paisley.

This is so sad, typical shortsighted council numpties who don't see the value of building something up which could potentially have thousands of people coming into the city centre.
That first year with the cars on show in George square then the start at Blythswood was genuinely atmospheric, something to remember.

Yup, agreed. Glasgow Council in Missing-The-Point Shocker, again!

If it was a green solar/wind powered challenge to Monte Carlo I bet the whole city centre would be closed off for the day?

i marshalled the 1st year in glasgow and it was fantastic, did the scruitineering at GTC scotston and massive amount of cars, then the following day took over george square and we thought it was the start of something big, possibly a scottish open air motorsport show as there was reps there from almost every type of motorsport. then onto blythswood sq where the problems started, there was not enough space for all the spectators. last year at glasgow green was good and again it could have been the start of something big, some of us thought even a sprint in the park again it went pete tong. hope this year at paisley is better, different clowncil who might use this as the foundation for the future

2011 was brilliant, really enjoyed viewing the cars at George Square then seeing the cars off from blythswood square in the evening. I'll pop down to Paisley, next to the Abbey is a great setting, pity about the numbers but it's local to me so will nip down to show some support.

I think there's some historical connection viz. Paisley (Linwood) and the 60th anniversary of the Hillman Imp.

Why is that then? Do you know anything about the history of Paisley?

It has a deeply interesting history of shipbuilding, engineering and car production. It is to me entirely appropriate to use it for the start of the Monte.

The problem here is not Paisley or its population. It's the appallingly corrupt, incompetent Renfrewshire Council.

By the way, cars flown from anywhere would land at Glasgow Airport. Despite the name, it is in Paisley, not Glasgow.

As I said, I’ve nothing against Paisley. However, the Rally Monte Carlo Historique is a recreation of the Rally Automobile Monte Carlo, and is open to cars that participated between 1955 and 1980. For much of that period (until 1973, I believe), Blythswood Square was one of the starting points, being the headquarters of the Royal Scottish Automobile Club (now the Blythswood Hotel), where drivers would assemble in the build up to the rally. For me, personally, some of the romance is lost is starting it from a location which, despite the fact they once built cars there, has no connection to past rallies as far as I know.

Some atmospheric photos of the rally leaving from Blythswood Square in the 50s and 60s here:

Paisley is famous for cotton mills. There were also munitions during world wars. There has never been a shipbuilding tradition in Paisley - ships in the River Cart? The airport is at Abbotsinch, not Paisley. Rootes built the Imp plant at Linwood, which is not Paisley.

At one point Paisley had 5 shipyards, family on my mothers side worked in some of these yards, from Wikipedia...

"The town also supported a number of engineering works some of which relied on the textile industry, others on shipbuilding. Paisley once had five shipyards including John Fullerton and Company (1866–1928), Bow, McLachlan and Company (1872–1932) and Fleming and Ferguson (1877–1969). These have declined in the area, with engineering firms such as Fullerton, Hodgart and Barclay and Whites Engineering[clarification needed] closing in the mid-1970s.[citation needed]"
