Grew up in cumbernauld
Like most places there's good bits and bad bits, only Cumbernauld seems to exacerbate the differences. Some of it is a massive hole rejected by Satan himself and then you've got really nice, peaceful housing estates.
Don't walk through carbrain
Don't try and walk to anywhere. it's an impossible maze
underpasses are filled with 13 year olds drinking buckfast (underpasses are everywhere)
The youth of several areas have regular fights
The town centre is reasonably safe.
taekwondo is the only reason I survived. I can show you the wound from where I was knifed.

Like MS, I was brought up in Cumbernauld when it was first developed as an overspill from the tenaments of Glasgow. I've lived in various parts, including Carbrain and would not advise going there at night these days. Petty crime is a real issue and drugs are fairly widespread.
As with all towns, it has expanded over the years, so it now meets up with "nicer" parts like Dullatur, which used to be some distance from the town itself.
The up-side is that there are some fairly large houses that can be purchased for a lot less than the equivalent house elsewhere, but if you choose any of the outlying areas a car is a must and your wife, or significant other will also need a car, assuming you aren't based at home.
The town centre is quite possibly the worst of its kind anywhere, all due to some really monumentally stupid decisions by the Cumbernauld Development Corporation in the late 60s and 70s.
Personally, I wouldn't live there ever again, but maybe that's what 30 years of living there does to you!

Maybe its just me? But you have been offered a job in Cumbernauld, well based in Cumbernauld but covering a large area. And you don't intend to live there either? Why does it matter wtf its like? I work in Kinning Park, i cover a large area. I don't give a s

t what its like as a place?as has been said, cumbernauld is not the greatest town. however as you've said you would only be working there, this gives you a huge scope for where you could easily live in central scotland and still have a fairly short commute to work.
for example living in the stirling area (30min commute to cumbernauld) would be greta if you have an active outdoors type lifestyle. loads of biking trails, walking, countryside close by, skiing in winter within 2hours of your house, great driving roads on your doorstep in summer.
not sure where you would be moving from, but property prices are probably going to be way lower. however it usually means travelling into glasgow/ edinburgh for a big night out. but considering i'm only 15mins away by car (£25 taxi fare) its not really that big a deal.

I worked for a firm recently based near Cumbernauld airport and the only interesting thing in the office was the small planes and microlights etc buzzing about overhead. They have plenty of fast food places for lunch but I can't think of any other plus points apart from it's only a quick jaunt back to civilisation
Yeah i'd work there.
I have done the odd days work in Cumbernauld for an old employer, it's no worse than any other Scottish 'new town' in my experience.
That said, i would rather not live there. Geographically it lends itself quite well to living in Edinburgh or Glasgow so thats something you should think about.
