Hi

I had the pleasure of driving up to Inverness today and back down to Edinburgh and after leaving Inverness , I was “with” a marked car for a good hour after Inverness.

He pulled in , did a u turn then headed back up the road…

My question is , do they just “drive up and down” on their own allocated section for the day?

Pretty much.
The average speed cameras are still pointless.

Has anyone heard of the avg cameras catching anyone - as in are they fully functional?

I very rarely see a police car when travelling on the A9 South from Inverness and I've done it twice this week. Yes, the speed cameras are operational but only two it seems and usually the Moy/Tomatin ones.

Curious as to how you know which ones are active?

These days if I travel when it's quiet I tend to just set the cruise at a (genuine GPS) 65 and plod along - you still blast past almost everything else on the road though!

I had my first speeding penalty recently - from the A9 close to Kingussie. Speed was 70mph so this must have been on a non-dual section. I have heard that there is a margin of 10% + 3, i.e. if I was at 69 it would have been fine but unsure if this is an urban myth.

Not sure if it was an average camera or not, I think not. Was very surprised as, not sure how to say this, but I pretty much always speed up there and have never had a fine so like others assumed the cameras didn't do anything.

Given most of the deaths seem to happen at junctions all the cameras and traffic police in the world won't stop people killing themselves and others by policing speed. That said the price of dualling the whole road is ridiculous, at most they should be replacing the bad junctions with roundabouts.

Don't believe the +10% thing. Okay it's 20 years ago now but I had the dubious honour of a fine and 3 points for 72mph in the 70mph of the A9 dual carriageway at Daviot.

That seems quite unlikely...

I travel all over the country making full use of the GPS verified 10% thing and have never been fined.

How were you caught? Were you in a van subject to lower limits or something?

Another doubter here.

I regularly travel between Dundee and Aberdeen on the A90 which is all avg cameras now, cruise set at GPS 75mph without any letterbox contact smile

Surely the ticket provides some info on type of speed trap used? What’s their evidence?
