I was thinking aviemore, has anyone been?
Granton on Spey, about a 10 min drive up the road from Avie more is much nicer, and has a great caravan park and curry house.Plus there's lots to do in that area, although perhaps your wee one is just a little too wee for most of it (ie Landmark, Nessie Trip, Inverness, playbarn/crazy golf at Aviemore) There is however lots of walks in the area, plus a great kids play park, local swimming and an ace little sweetie shop with in the village. As well as a pub and a mini supermarket.
We're going back this year

Damn just found out, that we might not be going back this year

Not sure about entertainment for a 2 year old but there is lots to do in general.
Osprey watching, fishing, lots of great walks in Rothiemurcus, sledge dog riding, clay pigeon shooting, best distilleries in the world, steam railway at boat of garten.
The McDonald hotel complex in Aviemore is good and has a good pool, food court and restaurants.

If you go to Speyside , don't forget to visit the Wildlife Park at Kingussie
yep thats a winner, just take them outside its all good. the osprey centre at Boat of Garten is good as well. Aviemore is there to show the kids the scottish outdoors are nice. Middle of aviemore is not too bad either. there is a big kids jungle gym place by coylumn bridge as well. Might be too wee for landmark, its verging on theme park sized now, a few years time and they will love it! Weather is the big one for there too. The waltzing waters I took the kids too, it was there when I was little, and it is virtually identical but with added smell of old person wee.
But just being out and about, no cars, people hassles will be enough for kids and adults to enjoy. If you like shopping and cities this might not be your ticket! Although Inverness my missus reckons is better than Aberdeen for shopping.

edit. how could i forget the STEAM TRAIN! Boat of garten to aviemor. its little boy heaven, works for me too i must admit.

Lefty,
I can thoroughly recommend Grantown/Aviemore area too. We have a house in Grantown and enjoy spending long weekends up there through the summer.
Aside from the amazing scenery, fresh air and (usually) cracking weather in the summer there are the Loch's (Inch, Morlich) the Cairngorm Centre, the Reindeer Sanctuary and feeding grounds on the way up to Cairngorm and so much more. The Glass House restaurant in Grantown (just off the high street) is superb and well worth a visit.
Hope you have a good time. My parents will be up there in July for 2 weeks on an Aston owners tour and i'll try to be up there in the 911 for a week or so too. Feel free to stop us if you spot us!
Cheers
