Aberdeen harbour / boats question
Discussion
I saw a lot last week too, more than normal I agree. I can only assume due to it being peak offshore season lots of vessels coming in and out for project mobs, sitting out there for the tides to change and a pilot boat, depending on the size of the vessel. Just my guess, I am sure someone will come along with the the technical reason.

The tankers are ones my company looks after and they're simply too large to come into port.
The other vessels are a mix of off-hire ROVSV, DSV, PSV & AHTS which the Harbour have no room for. Add to that the poor weather of last week where we saw a good number heading for port and we have the situation you see at the moment. There is also a serious case of oversupply on vessels where we're seeing new tonnage arriving all the time but without the work that had been forecast when committing to build them. This is driving the prices down and means that the vessels will sit alongside awaiting a job.
Each vessel pays the Harbour vessel dues which entitle them to 7 days in port but there is a rule in operation that means during busy spells any vessel not working in port must sit in the bay and await a free berth.
Hope this helps. Anyone interested to know more just take a quick look at my website on my profile or drop me an email.
Cheers, James

And if you're bored...take a look on this website, and find out what/where the vessels are going etc..

Kiltie.
The Aberdeen Harbour site is worth a click as well, gives the arrivals, sailings & vessels in port, tells you where they have come from where they are going. It also cover vessels in the bay when they have been moved to make space for working traffic.
IIRC, I am sure there is a live feed in the Maritime Museum. a place always worth a visit in my opinion

There were 32 spot market vessels avaliable at the end of last week out of Aberdeen, as JamesB says, a serious case of oversupply caused by crazy speculative vessel building on the back of a few years of high dayrates. Alas with several hundered more vessels on order worldwide it aint looking good for vessel owners over the next few years.
Supply vessel rates (for carrying cargo offshore) were as high as £50k per day last year, now £3500 as of Friday. AHTS (tugs to move rigs) rates hit £250,000 per day last year, currently at £15k and have seen them down to £5k already this year. Not a good time to be operating a vessel!

I've not written the July one yet but expect it to be equally as cheery!

WTF with Aberdeen Harbour, supposed to be in tomorrow for a Mob/demob but not been able to confirm berth. they continue to say pencilled in... I thought tied up vessels got punted to the bay for a tide to make way for loading vessels, Peterheads the same, and Dundee saying lay by berth only... make arranging the crew change intersting I can tell you..
